Well, I meant 'a Walter Davis'. Last week I managed to get a sweet little trade with yours truly Gunknifenut to find myself having one of my first taste of Walt's blades.

It came with a Talfuchre sheath, which I have to say is every bit is great as they look in their pics.

This is a thick one! Its 3/16" thickness and I think targeted more at tactical. At 4" length and sporting black micarta slabs it is a real handful. I'd probably prefer this blade in 5/32" or 1/8" to tell the truth, but the flat grind is in fact quite aggressive. Also, true to the reputation that Walt has, this blade came sharp. A little bit of stropping made it crazy sharp. I was impressed that the knife behaved like they say it is supposed to do, as I seem to hear rumours often and then being a bit disappointed at the reality. This was a case of no disappointment.

I really like the not too aggressive contouring the slabs sport on this thing. They are hand filling, but not excessively so. The slight hump in the middle does help with grip and the slimming of the slabs towards the front end also aids purchase. Again, I think the knife would be slightly more comfortable just a touch thinner had the tang been a bit thinner on this one, but its fine as as is and for those who love a robust knife, you get all that in this package. The only thing I really found ergo's wise is a slight sharpness at the top of the guard. I think I'll eventually touch this up on the grinder just to dull it some. Otherwise, I think the ergo's are fantastic on this blade!

This is the first time I saw one of Talfuchre's sheaths. I have to say that I'm really impressed with his craftsmanship. The knife sits nice and deep. Retention certainly isn't jump proof and you can shake the knife out while it is inverted, but it holds well enough when the knife is simply inverted. This is partly due to the fact that the Walter Davis knife is a solid like package and its density makes retention while inverted difficult.

Stitching is nice and even. Dye job is great. Love Tal's stamp. The sheath allows for dangler carry, but also has an integrated belt loop below the D-ring to allow belt carry close to the body. You can remove the dangler, but the sheath sits just as nice on the belt through the belt loop with the dangler folded. This is an outstanding sheath! If you are hesitating or thinking about sheath makers, I'm quite comfortable recommending Talfuchre as a really capable sheath man!

Dinner? Well, I was responsible for the cooking tonight. Lamb and pork chops on a natural charcoal pit. Can't think of anything better. I even dawned my MEC merino wool undershirt, new Swandri Wool work shirt and Swandri wool Socks and enjoyed cooking the lamb out in our misting rainy nasty yucky Christmas weather!

Admittedly, the rain caused a bit of difficulties lighting. I started the fire off with some hard wood, but given the rain, I totally cheated and poured on a bit of white gas to help things go. A new Going Gear 3/8" Miche metal rod and striker helped kick the white gas into gear!

Well, enjoy your Christmas dinner everybody. I know my pork chops and lamb chops went over well with the steamed aspargus and rice. Now, I just gotta start working on all the boose that was provisioned into our little homestead!

Glad you like your new knife, Ken:thumbup: And you're surely right about TF's sheaths, they are both classy and capable!!!

Dinner looks good, too:D

Hey k, Merry Christmas, and thanks for giving me a preview of the next knife you're going to trade me. :D

You'll like this one doc, I'm sure of it! I'll bring it along next time we get together ;)

Great pics and review Ken. Walter sure makes some nice looking knives. That sheath looks pretty darn good to. Awesome Job there TF.

Do you know how close that one came to being one of my 'keepers'. I love that grind and handle on that knife.

I remember making the sheaths for that batch. I wanted to make one or two of them a lower ride on the pouch sheath. As the blade was more 'tactical' I wanted the sheath to be a little easier on the draw. I hope she is holding tight for you. If not - let me know - I will take care of you.

i really that knife.. i bet it's a solid user..:)

Fantastic pics.
I really, really like Walter Davis's knives, especially the larger ones!

Cheers

Damn Ken, cant ask for much more then that. New knife from a great maker and a better man, one of the nicest sheaths out there, again, from a great maker and man, and an awsome dinner. Sounds like you have a great Christmas my friend, stay safe brother.

Great blade - it looks just like a Laconico.

TF is the man with sheaths!!!

This one was a keeper:o I have to many knives that arent getting used.
I still cherish Walts "Purpose Driven" model...its one of the best knives I have ever held. It is a little bit tactical, and a little bit traditional...and super tough.
I am still waiting for a special knife from Walter...it will be awesome.

I love his knives, I don't own one but used a couple on a pass around. Never used better knives
