What we have here is a CPM steel chemically very similar to HAP 40, it is called REX 76. It is hardened to 64RC, and according to Brad at Peters it took him several tempering cycles to achieve it as it starts at nearly 70RC. I suspect this will result in decent toughness given its extremely high alloy contentent. It is an investment to bring these to market as the steel is not cheap, and you have to buy a good bit of it at a time. I thought this could be a great way to contribute to the knife community by introducing a not so common blade steel at a pretty low entry fee. If this goes well there are a few other steels I will do this same way. email- gscreely+blades@gmail.com to order (this is not a paypal email)

Avalible immediately- Non-grinded blanks (no bevel) $65

Two Weeks lead time- ground and sharpened (belt finish) $115

Here is the alloy comparison:

Here are the specs: they are .160 stock (specify if you would like the 2 hole or 3 hole design

I have a couple questions and I hope you don't think that I am muddying up your thread but I thought these were questions others may have as well. How many do you have to buy at a time and how many do you have if it's OK for me to ask that? Can they be bought with the primary grind but not sharpened for $100 A piece let's say?Do these need to be heat treated after they have been ground given that you don't over grind and burn a spot? Thank you for doing this. Great idea.

I had about 35 blades cut (probably close to the minimum), and I have about 10 of each of the 2 style available in this form.

Can they be bought with the primary grind but not sharpened for $100 A piece let's say?

I would sell them not sharpened, but I don't think I would offer a discount as 95% of the work is grinding the bevel, and sharpening is the most gratifying part.

One of the interesting attributes of this steel is that it is a red-hardness steel. In other words its temper is very resistant to heat. This blade was tempered around 1100f, so there is more breathing room compared to blades tempered at 350f lets say. So to answer the question it will not need to be heat treated again (unless you really cook it on a belt). I would recomend only grinding with ceramic belts.

I am going to try to purchase some of these. If not this week then next if there is any left. You spoke about other steals my question is would you consider doing some in CPM 15 be possibly? The only CPM 15 be knives that I have seen available now are from Russia and they are blanks as well. I would like to see someone from United States tackle this. If they were waterjet cut and then came from thinner stock like around .13 the .14 I think they might be easier to grind and also still tough enough.
