HAP40/SUS 410 sharpening question

I have one of the previous Spyderco Meerkat sprint runs with the HAP40/SUS410 blades. Do I need diamond plates to sharpen that steel like I do with 15v steel? How about the new release using SPY27 blade steel. Can I use ceramics or does it require a diamond plate for sharpening?

Yes and no. A good set of waterstones, like the Shapton Glass can usually sharpen HAP40. Diamonds are still faster be can also leave the edge a bit rough depending on the finish grit. SPY27 is not hard to sharpen at all, nothing special required. Gets VERY sharp too.

Naniwa Chocera stones do HAP40 just fine, too.

Most definitely NOT for this one .
Sharpens like a dream with modern but basic stones (ceramic , corundum etc) . I've been using this stuff every work day fairly often during the day .
Super pleased with it .
On fairly tame material : box tape , masking tape , thick paper used in packaging and double wall cardboard five feet at a slice .
Gets rid of the bur on the stones pretty great .
If you like a strop or two I've been using Gold Carver's strop abrasive on denim . Hardly at all though .

HAP40/SUS410

AAAAhhhhh now THAT is the stuff right there ! ! !
Right up there with M4 (I can't give a higher complement to a blade alloy than that) .
Easy to sharpen , gets stupid sharp , hangs on to the higher sharpness long enough to please me .

Couple thoughts :
It is a High Speed Tool Steel so it is pretty hard and tough .
Has 3 % vanadium so is bellow the "threshhold" for needing daimonds .
I think it can benefit from a bit of a brief strop on a diamond loaded strop ~ 3 micron .

Has a good bit of Tungsten (W) in it so that NEVER FAILS to make me happy with the performance .
