Happy Birthday, Joezilla!

Thanks everyone. I had a great birthday. EMT_Lee came over and we went hiking around the mountains of NC. Found an old homestead that was really cool. Lee got his first friction fire going, and we got to check out a bunch of natural tinders out in the woods. Lee found some wild onions, and we may have found some wild potatos too, I'm still trying to ID them. ANyone have any idea?

Lee did some acrobatics to try to get some tinder fungus (it was nice not having to climb stuff for a change). I tried my hand at knapping some thick old glass.

Some cool pics, and I know Lee had a blast, the first friction fire is a high all it's own.

We have a lot of horsehoof fungus in this area, I need to play with processing some of it.

Not sure on those wild potatoes though, I'd have to see it in flower to even hazard a guess. I have been studying them some...we have lots of members of the nightshade family here in the south. What I found really interesting about the reading was that the young tuber roots are edible but once mature is toxic and I've found nowhere near enough information to say when the change actually occurs. The nightshade family of plants...other than tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers...is a little worrisome for me anyway. Odd how so many are edible while others are so deadly. That had to be fun for our ancestors to figure out eh? I have trying to locate and positively identify Hopniss, or Indian potatoes, but haven't really gotten anywhere with it.

It was a fun time. We'll have to do it again sometime. I know some other hills and woods around Melvin doesn't own, or wherever you said before. :D
