Cool. Happy early birthday. That's a sharp looking sheath, too.
That's what my firesteel looks like on the side it's been used most. It still works, though.

Some years ago I used to read articles by Chris and Gretchen Janowski in magazines like Practical Survival, and American Survival Guide. He was a big influence on me then and the inspiration for my taking some of the teenagers in our neighborhood out in the woods and teaching them things about starting fires under different conditions, building shelters, making shelters, building fish traps and spears, and setting snares and stuff. I always wanted to go through the course at the World Survival Institute but never made it. But today I got an awesome early birthday present.
It is pretty badly pitted, and a perfect example of just how environmentally sensitive ferrocerium is....but it's still something I have wanted for a very long time and had all but forgotten about until Marion and I got into a conversation on different ferrocerium fire starters. When he mentioned it I immediately remembered and wanted to buy it.

and he sent me this sheath for an RC-3 we had been talking about since before I got the 3MIL. I don't know if he is a mind reader or what but I don't think he knew I was working on getting a RAT PACK RC-3 which has orange G-10 handle scales this will go just great with!! I don't think it looks bad at all even with the green handle of this one so this will be the sheath I use when I carry the 3MIL on my pack strap, especially when I'm holding class. I love the bi-symmetric shape and the retention is perfect!

Those were given to me by Chris, I was going to write an article for American Survial Guide, and I did write the article, but then the magazine went down. So I am happy to see them go to someone who will really appreciate them.
Yeah, I couldn't sell it to you, what with Chris giving it to me in the first place.
And my thought is that you could pop that ferro rod out, and replace it with another, that you would probably maintain better than I did that one.... But on the subject of that corrosion, you want to watch storing ferro rods together, because one started that way, and now all of them that were in that batch won't stop doing that....
Actually I did not know about the new purchase, I just had that one floating around, it has higher than average retention, which I really like, but doesn't seem to go so well with the average customer. I built that one as an example, and then it just sort of got lost in a pouch of example sheaths. So, then I saw it one day, and thought that you could probably use it. And since I was already sending you the firestarters, why not?
Best,
Marion
Thanks Bro! Yes, they are greatly appreciated! That makes them even more special. I probably could change it out...but I doubt I will....unless it starts deteriorating more, I'd rather keep them original if possible. The last ones that corroded in my pocket got sanded and then a soaking in baking soda water. I kept them for a while and them gave them away. As far as I know they are working still...but it was only a day's worth of corrosion...but pretty bad still. Thanks for the tip, I don't store mine together anyway...they are all in separate kits.
Cool, I like heavier retention because I tend to carry tip-up a lot. This sheath is awesome! I'll probably need to get you to make a darker one for when I'm doing my photography and wanting to be less..."conspicuous" lol.
