Happy Fourth of July

My favorite part of the snopes commentary are these words:

"Evidently Adams was right: So great is our need for simplified, dramatic events and heroes that the even the real-life biographies of the fifty-six men who risked their lives to publicly declare American independence are no longer compelling enough. Through multiple versions of pieces like the one quoted above, their lives have been repeatedly embellished with layers of fanciful fiction to make for a better story"

We see this happen still, even now. The death of Pat Tillman in Afganistan was twisted into a tale worthy of a John Wayne war movie, although wasn't his story heroic enough without covering up his death by friendly fire?

I'll take our heros--new ones and old ones-- as they really were, warts and all.

Thanks to both of you guys.

Phil

I cannot watch the fireworks I cannot listen to the songs I chose solitude and quiet this week end. The fireworks are not needed to enhance my feelings for this holiday or what it means. These wellings are within me with every breath. The patriotic songs have simply become something to emotional for me to handle. The living have each other and those who I was close with are all gone. The echos of the voices of those dreamers of liberty who sacrificed all for there beliefs that mans destiny was not only to stand upright but to walk proudly in freedom no matter what the personal cost is only the foundationary testimonional to all of those who have and are still taking the fallen standard and proudly bearing it into the breach for these very same beliefs. If you listen closly you can here there haunting refrains liberty or death, all men created equal, inalienable rights, and our flag was still there. Concepts and actions only dreamt of for thousands of years. For me it is a time of rememberance and through those memories a time of renewal a time to push aside doubts and fears to remember that we all have a debt to those who have given and are gone as well as those whom we shall pass the torch on to. A time to press on but for this weekend mostly a time to simply reflect. LT

Well said, Rich...

Thanks.
