My favorite part of the snopes commentary are these words:
"Evidently Adams was right: So great is our need for simplified, dramatic events and heroes that the even the real-life biographies of the fifty-six men who risked their lives to publicly declare American independence are no longer compelling enough. Through multiple versions of pieces like the one quoted above, their lives have been repeatedly embellished with layers of fanciful fiction to make for a better story"
We see this happen still, even now. The death of Pat Tillman in Afganistan was twisted into a tale worthy of a John Wayne war movie, although wasn't his story heroic enough without covering up his death by friendly fire?
I'll take our heros--new ones and old ones-- as they really were, warts and all.
Thanks to both of you guys.
