Happy Thanksgiving

I don't get it. What is thanks giving giving thanks to?

Harvest, if I am not mistaken.

In Germany we have Erntedank (which has harvest and thanks in it), but it conveniently was settled to be the first Sunday of October. And it is only celebrated in church.

OK, can't resist temptation ...

In the US it is also celebrated not only for the harvest of the current year, but also as commemorative holiday for an early Thanksgiving celebrated by the pilgrims in Plymouth in the year 16something ... which makes it an important national holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving! My wife cooks the yankee style dressing since she is from New York and since I am from Texas I am making my cornbread dressing.

Happy Thanksgiving to all...

Please keep those men and women involved in keeping us safe both here and overseas in you thoughts/prayers today. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to be away from my family during the Holidays.

Yup, you are correct, the Pilgrims were giving thanks for a good harvest, for the help of the Native American's that helped them, and for not having yet another year of them and their family's dying off of starvation.

Happy Thanksgiving.

The first Thanksgiving occurred when Captain John Woodlief led the newly-arrived English colonists to a grassy slope along the James River and instructed them to drop to their knees and pray in thanks for a safe arrival to the New World. It was December 4, 1619, and 38 men from Berkeley Parish in England vowed:

"Wee ordaine that the day of our ships arrivall at the place assigned for plantacon in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perpetually keept holy as a day of Thanksgiving to Almighty God."

This was a year before the pilgrims arrived in Plymouth. Unlike the Puritans, the Virginians celebrated Christmas, too.

Happy Thanksgiving to all and your Families,God BlessAnd Your Brother's and Sister's over in the Sandbox too God Bless Them and Prayers to them and Their Families.
