My dad told stories of WW2...he lived through it all right, as a kid on the ground in London!

About the wildest story was the time a Spitfire pilot was circling around way up high on "Doodlebug patrol". The "Doodlebug" was the first German unmanned bomb, it was a jet-powered plane that was pointed in the direction of the enemy and the "range to target" crudely determined by fuel level. These suckers were pretty fast, especially for the time. So this Spitfire gets directed to it and he gains enough speed to catch it by diving at it...he opens up on this thing and manages to take it out, but it's shrapnel took him down - and the altitude was too low for a chute.

Damn shame about England today. They had their moments.

Pop was later a combat engineer in Suez and Cypress, British Army. He always used to laugh about the Scottish demo team that hit the beach, made a beeline for the Egyptian national bank and blew the safe
