I used my new Hapstone RS system to sharpen four kitchen knives and three folders so far. Resulting sharpness is very good. Best result was with a Spyderco PM2 in S30V which came out extremely sharp. I took it to 8000 grit and stropped with 1micron. Simply the sharpest blade I have ever been able to produce - almost mirror polish but still has “bite.”
I find it somewhat challenging to get blades centered in the RS clamps. On the last couple blades I used Kapton tape to protect the blade and found that tape seemed to help the clamps grip better. Takes me longer than expected to get a blade clamped just right. Clamp system on KME is much easier to use. After I get a blade clamped, I check the angle on both sides. I often need to loosen and re-center the blade. I usually can get within one tenth of a degree after two or three attempts. This is crucial so bevel thickness is the same on both sides.
I really like the Hapstone Premium CBN stones. The CBN’s produce very nice refined grain. I run the stones on an angle from the back of the blade toward the tip to produce a nice grain that slopes down the bevel. The quality of edge that comes off the 1000 CBN stone is fantastic. I ordered the 800 CBN stone - it should arrive today. I think diamond stones would be more practical below 400 grit because the 80 and 150 CBN do not cut fast enough for me. Maybe 80 and 150 would benefit from lapping. I took 777 Edge’s recommendation and added a low grit diamond stone. I picked up an Atoma 140 which cuts very fast but, now I have to deal with different stone thickness. I should note that I apply a drop of honing oil to the stones before use as recommended by Hapstone. Oil makes it easy to keep the stones clean. Hapstone Premium CBN stones are easy to recommend especially in combination with a course diamond for reprofiling.
A couple small issues: 1) Need to return/exchange the second pair of RS clamps - they are not right. 2) The tube that slides over the rod becomes less smooth running after a little bit of use. I need to frequently wipe the rod clean and run a cotton patch through the tube as if cleaning a gun barrel. Wonder if the upgraded holder with linear bearing improves this? 3) Suspect the magnet / ball interface is not as smooth as it should be therefore the chrome ball shows wear already. I’m concerned that the chrome ball won’t hold up well. My new RS system is not perfect but it is a significant upgrade from my well-used KME.
Have not had a chance to test scissor or chisel modules yet but, I will. I ordered the C-Clamp so I can sharpen longer kitchen knives. I will likely order the RS height adjustment upgrade.
In the back of my mind, I wonder if R2 might have been a better choice? Overall, I am pleased with my new Hapstone RS system and will be on the bench sharpening with it again today…
Hi!
MrMoose
Thank you for your detailed feedback — it really helps us improve, and I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying your RS system overall. Let me address each point below:
1. RS Clamps
No problem at all — just send us a message and we’ll take care of the exchange or return promptly.
2. Guide Rod Movement
It’s best to use
PTFE (Teflon) lubricant to keep the motion smooth over time.
Alternatively, our
upgraded stone holder with a linear bearing offers a much smoother and more stable glide. If you decide to upgrade or run into any issues, we’re here to help.
3. Chrome Ball Wear
We’re aware of this issue in earlier batches — it doesn’t affect functionality, but we’ve already addressed it in newer units.
If the wear becomes a concern or causes discomfort, we’ll be happy to replace the joint for you at no cost.
About the Clamps
The key factor is the type of clamps:
Standard clamps have an internal groove that makes it easier to secure knives with bevels, but they may be slightly unstable with flat bevels. In this case, we recommend using electrical tape or boat fabric to compensate for the groove and ensure better fixation. You can also use straight clamps, which give you flexibility and versatility in clamping knives of any shape.
You can also tighten the screws a little more to prevent them from loosening during sharpening, don't worry.
If you ever have doubts or questions, I’m always here to assist.
Best regards,
Mario
