Hard Choice Fallkniven Thor or Fehrman Extreme Judgement

I would get the Ferhman Extreme Judgement. I just plain like the knife better.

Yeah, all my other stuff is really light though so I don't mind a heavy knife. Depending on weather sometimes I'll just have a sleeping bag and a Nylon hammock with bug net, in addition to food and water. Both weigh under a pound including the quick fastener for attaching the hammock to the tree. If you guys have never tried backpacking with a hammock its awesome. I love being under the stars and off the ground. It also helps that I'm 6' 250 lbs. from lifting. So I'm a bit of a mule when it comes to lugging stuff.

Awesome! I love big knives!
I own the Tor or "Thor" it fits great in my hands, I like its convex edge, and the laminated steel helps alot with its strength, and I think it is the uhh... "prettier" of the two.

But man that Ferhman looks pretty tough, I'd love to handle one. Is that edge slightly recurved? If so it may be a bit trickier to sharpen. Seems like a great knife though.

I wouldn't let the review by Cliff bother me.I think the Fehrman factory edge may be stronger after one sharpening.I've found this to be the case with some other knives.

I chopped a flint rock on a miss whack when I first got my Fehrman and made a micro chip near the tip.It didn't take long to get rid of it with a DMT stone. The point is that I've used it hard after sharpening and have not had the edge even micro chip again.I've not chopped rocks, though I have beat it through some very tough knots.

Looking forward to a field review once you get a chance to put them through their paces. I'm a lightweight packer also, but despite that I always carry a medium sized knife or hatchet. There is just no other way to split wood in the field that I am aware of. Ok, a saw will do it, but will take a lot of time and energy.

I'll most definitely post field reviews on both knives and how they compare as large camp knives. I know most consider the fehrman to be superior but I have a feeling that the Thor will be able to hold its own pretty well. If you watch Nutnfancy's reviews on youtube he rates the Cold steel trail master very high as a wilderness blade and the fallkniven thor is a lot like a trail master san mai only with better steel and a better handle.

My prediction is, the Extreme Judgement will excel more as a chopper/splitter and the Thor will be the more well rounded camp knife. I think the Fallkniven is the better defensive blade due to the pointy tip, bowie blade, and steel guard. As far as toughness goes I think the fehrman will be slightly tougher because of the full tang, micarta scales, and overall blade geometry and thickness. But I have no illusions that the fallkniven will be anything short of a beast either. If you watch the destruction tests on knifetests.com, fallkniven's laminated VG-10 is some beastly strong stuff and this knife is thicker and wider than the A1 that was tested. I can only imagine the kind of abuse this big a chunk of laminated VG-10 can take.

Good points! I have S1, A1 and A2 and they are all great knives. Thor is 1 mm thicker than A1 that Noss tested. Let us know what do you think after handling both knives.

coldblooded357,

Any updates on these knives thus far? I am considering a Extreme Judgement, and was curious about your thoughts.

I would suggest the Fehrman if it isn't too expensive for your budget. Fabulous knife in 3V. Watch the corrosion and it will not let you down.

Nutnfancy reviews a knife according to its value for money. In that regard the SK-5 Trailmaster is a helluva lot of knife for the dough. Back then you could get the coated one for around $100. I do think you should have considered the San Mai TM as well, in that price category but I don't think you did badly at all with those two choices.
