Hard use 5-7" fixed blade?

Thanks for all the information and suggestions guys. I think I am going to go with the Ritter RSK MK2.

Does anyone by chance know where I can get this other then knifeworks?
Just wondering.

Thanks again everyone.

For hard use and abuse, it's very hard to beat the Becker BK-2. There are other knives in the Becker range that are better at one thing or another but for serious abuse, I double dare you to try to hurt a BK-2.

If you can spare an extra $20 or so, i'd third what has been said and look at busse/swamp rats Ratmandu. Absolute beast of a blade and unconditional warranty - if you break it, it is replaced or fixed for free.

Bleh. I read the price range as 70-100 which is why I left out ESEE and some others. I'd look at ESEE 6 or go with a Becker BK10 (I like the thumb ramp). If you don't like the handles as others have mentioned, you can get micarta and still be within budget.

I think the OP has chosen the Ritter MK2. But I agree with choosing the BK-10 over the BK-2 if one goes with the regular Becker line. The 0.25" steel on the BK-2 makes the knife more difficult to use other than for rough tasks. I would call the BK-2 sort of a demolition knife. :D

Well I have made my decision I think anyways.
Either the bk10 or mk2 I like them both. Have some thinking to do for sure.

Does anyone know a good place to get micarta replacement scales for either one?

I'd don't believe the kabar micarta scales fit the Ritter w/out modifying them because of the weights?

Your probably right. I was wondering the same thing myself.
Anyone with any information on this?

A lot of very good suggestions so far. I know it's a little longer blade but have you looked at the BK5?

Remove the weights, and they should fit just fine.

Obviously, these are not Kabar micarta; but I have put scales from this maker on both Camillus and Kabar Beckers...and I have done the same with Kabar micarta (in fact, I have more Kabar micarta on Camillus models). The only handle problem you might encounter is probably with TKC G10, because they do not use the stock holes...I think the different skeletonization on the BK12 tang leaves material where the fasteners for the TKC scales would go. (I'm pretty sure I checked that some years ago; but, at this moment, I'm not positive - so don't take that part as gospel)

Love the knife. Beautiful with those wood scales. Can I ask where you acquired them?

I had a look and that is a damn sexy knife. I just think it's a touch too much blade for me. But great suggestion. Thanks

The scales are by tommythewho. Pretty sure he's a member here; but he sells mainly on ebay.
The BK5 is a nice knife...and I have extras NIB from my BK20 packages. If you decide you want one down the road, get in touch with me (my email address is in all my ads)

I like the Becker knives, but my favorite do almost everything Becker is the BK-15 (small BK-5). It is a knife you can actually carry and not think about. Batonning big stuff is not on my radar. Works just fine for smaller stuff which is mostly what people use. Add a folding saw and you're set.

Added: This size of knife and blade shape is absolutely my favorite for the woods. I like about a 5-5.5" blade for general purposes and the knife does not have to be a tank to be useful. This is one of the reasons I am thinking about a handmade 5" Kephart for the woods. Think it would work perfectly with a thin steel and the spear point type blade shape. Not a skinner, but you could muddle through the process.....

There is always more than one way to achieve a good useful knife fit and flexible tools for the woods. The many threads on the subject demonstrate it time after time.
