Summer's coming around, And I camp a lot, barebones minimalist style so i want a knife that can be used for heavy use and abuse. An example of abuse would be digging rocks out, so I'm not sleeping on them, making tent stakes, splitting thicker branches for kindling, general bushcraft related tasks. I'm using a DPX HEFT 4 right now and it's just too short for me. I'm not looking for a machete by any means, just a larger knife between 5-10 inches. I do not want any kabar bk2 recommendations please. I'm open to anything in terms of handle material and steel type, but I NEED full tang!!, no partial tangs! I'll probably replace the handles on whatever I get. Thanks

EDIT: Under $175 please! (Preferably between $50-$150)

What's your price range btw.

In your price range would get Becker BK20/9/7/4 and put some nice custom micarta scales on it.

If your going to be using it as a shovel to dig rocks out then I suggest a cheap knife.

You may want to go Schrade SCHF 51 or 52.

I know I am not spending $150 on a knife to use it as a shovel.

Since you edited your post with a price range, I would recommend Ontario Knives. US made and quality for the price.

Ontario SP8. Actually, for $150 you could get an SP8, a compact shovel so you're not abusing your blades, and still have enough to get another decent knife or something. Or since you're a minimalist, you could use the knife to make a digging stick so you're not abusing your knife.

+1

It kind of defeats the purpose of having a sharpened tool if you just slam it into the ground and immediately dull it.

I can't think of anything better than the ESEE 6, if you actually intend to pry rocks and such. Not only is it an all-around amazing knife, but if you somehow break it, they'll replace it.

I'd buy a knife, and a Cold Steel special forces shovel.

For hard use I like Busse, Swamp rat and scrapyard knives. Pricing one in that range will be tough.

I can't say I've ever dug rocks with any of my knives.

But I did have to chop frozen mud with an axe in a pinch to stop the huse from flooding.

Neighbors sure gave dad and I a look when they stumbled out at 2am to see what in the hell all the racket was. When they saw my dad and I furiously digging in the frozen garden with axes and pick axes, they just backed quietly into the house and never said a word!

No Becker? Ontario then. You can replace the rubber with stacked leather.

Ka Bar Marine utility knife fa sho. Cut off the top gaurd and your good to go. Would use my hands or a stick before I use my knife to dig rocks out with however. [emoji106]

OK, no BK2 recommendation. In which case, and based on your stated mission profile for the knife and price range, I would recommend a Becker BK9 or, ir you want something a little shorter, a BK7. That said, you budget, and some careful internet shopping, would provide you with a BK 9 AND and BK16 ... in which case you would be absolutely set.
