Hard Use Folder

I put a thread earlier to see if anybody has got a new Mini Recon 1 but it seems like only the tanto version is in stock anywhere and nobody has grabbed one. I think the spear point version will be a popular hard use, small folder.

I wouldn't pay pretty knife price for a user I want to beat up on unless you really need the longer edge retention.

Its not that i need the edge retention, but i feel like i sharpen my Rat-1 like every other day, and dont mind spending time on my knives, but just wish the blade retention could last a little while longer..

Longer edge retention isnt necessarily needed, but i feel as though with steels such as AUS-8, i end up sharpening my knives like every other day.

The Benchmade griptilian definatly comes to mind. Less than 4 ounces, axis lock, sweet 154cm/ 440c blade, and all around 80 bucks is pretty darn good.

you know, i was actually thinking about that myself. i have a mini grip and love that blade. love it. but seems a bit small to comfortably handle the tasks asked.

Here is what my knives see in a busy day:

what sort of tasks? I have a few RAT-1s as well and I gotta say that the grip will do everything you will throw at it (within reason).

The following is not an excact science but my experience.

Steels such as N690 Bohler, VG10, 154CM can last me a day before touchup. With a micro bevel with 600grit I can go 3-4 days.

Micro bevel on RWL-34 and CPM-S30V I can go 5-7 days without touchup.

CPM-M4 I can go a 7-9days at the most then require some touchup.

This does vary often as many of the material I cut has dirt in them that just destroys any edge.

To get the best performance out of a steel one needs to start sharpening according to that steels strength, but I really cant complain about any of my knives. They have all performed these tasks without fail. Even my Benchmade Griptilian that is 4 years old I think.

tasks such as presented in the video, some days less some days more. realistically i have to fully sharpen my rat 1 daily sometimes, and other times every two or three days. my mini grip can go much longer, but doesnt feel comfortable due to its tiny size

If you can get to a local shop that has some Spyderco's Kershaws and Benchmades try and feel the knives in hand. The full size Griptilian feels good in the hand and is a good workhorse, also have a look if possible at some of the other suggestions. Write them down and ask the person to show you them if they have them. Sometimes a design or knife just speaks to you and your needs above what is mentioned or recommended here.

you know what knife i really wish i could just magically turn my mini grip into a full size haha i regret getting the mini

LOL wow alot of smaller folders bein mentioned, hmm if you're wanting something that is super tough and easy to sharpen I would look at Cold Steels Recon 1 lineup ( don't stone me ppl :o ) The Tri-Ad lock is the toughest lock available, and their AUS8 steel is easy to sharpen and wont chip, cheap too I think you can pick one up for $60, but if price is no problem then a ZT is a good buy, Spyderco makes their knives for EDC and meticulus use guys, thats why the thin tips  , except for a few like the Manix of course, thats a big boy :D

Where's the popcorn?

Cue the fixed blade guys in 5,4,3,2......

Here, I am!

Seriously though. I will suggest that your own personal definition of "use" matters a lot. I have used some pretty thin folders REALLY hard by some people's standards, but I used them to cut things with either push or slicing cuts (no percussion, no prying) and they held up fine. I have often thought that people could accomplish a lot more with a lesser knife if they simply kept it sharp...so often I see someone pounding a dull knife through something that I could push cut with a properly finished knife...but that is a whole other argument:D (and it depends on what you need to separate in a given day...not everything can be "cut" in a conventional sense, thus the batons come out)

These threads seem to be generating a lot more suggestions these days than a few years ago when the same very short list of knives was seemingly always posed....

i agree, the benchmade barrage is an excellent choice. As for the recon, I love my recon one and aus 8 but for prolonged hard use I think some extra money on a harder steel would be worth it.

Get one of those...

what im looking for i guess is something that can hold an edge a bit longer than AUS 8. i dont need a super steel or anything... just closer so 154cm in terms of retention
