I never know what I may have to use a knife for. I don't like to use them for scraping or prying, but on occasion that may occur.
More often I need to cut very tough materials such as wire or open lots of bags of feed or concrete. I often split wood with my folders (I do some blacksmithing) so I need kindling to start the forge.
I never use anything but one-hand opening knives or fixed blades for work. I need knives with large blades and strong locks and grippy handles.
Two of my favorite work knives are the ZT MUDD and the Spyderco Gayle Bradley.
