Hi everyone,

This will mark my first post here onn bladeforums, I look forward to becoming part of the community.

So I am looking for a folding knife that can take a beating.

Brands that I trust are Benchmade, Spyderco, Kershaw and Buck, but if anyone know's of any models by other brands I should take into consideration, I would be grateful for your opinion on the matter.

The knife will be used as a work horse in my workshop.

Thanks,

Jonathan.

If price isn't much of a concern, look at the Zero tolerance line up. As tough as you could ever expect a folder to be.

Agree on the ZT in the $140 - $300 range. If price is really no object, try to check out a Hinderer or two also :)

Ontario Rat 1
Cold Steel Voyager series
Benchmade Adamas
Benchmade Contego
Spyderco Superleaf
Spyderco Tuff
Hogue EX-01
ZT 0550/0560
Striver SMF

ZT look really nice, strong lock-up and frame design and looks like they use excellent materials also. Thanks guys.

Had a look at the Hinderer, also looks great. Think they might be hard to come by in the UK though.

Maybe I should settle for the ZT Rick Hinderer model ;)

I would definitely look at the ZT0550/1. Great ergos, very useful blade size and profile and excellent steel (especially the Elmax version) in tidy, compact package. The only downsides are the fairly heavy weight and its not the quickest opening knife on the planet. But otherwise its a great folder!

Maybe I should settle for the ZT Rick Hinderer model ;)

What do you do for a living? I ask because that can greatly affect what knife might suite your work?

If you do hard cutting chores there are numerous knives on the market that can do that. I do hard cutting chores as part of my job description and do not like the thick edge geometry of the more popular 'hard use' knives. I realised this recently when I looked at my most used knives are the ones with thinner edge geometry that gives me less resistance when cutting. (Of course if you want to apply side lateral stresses to a blade this is not optimum and the thicker geometry might suite you better)

If price is no option there are numerous UK knife makers you can support as well.

This knife wouldn't be used at my day-job, it would stay in my workshop where it would be used for various different tasks or anything I can throw at it.

I want something heavy duty so I know I can use it without the risk of it breaking. I would also take it out with me when I go hunting/outdooring.

That isn't to say I wouldn't look after it though.

Which UK makers can you recommend me (only moved here a 2 months ago, British family but I lived in Spain).

I'll add my $0.02 worth here;

The ZT0550 is a terrific knife but it certainly isn't an amazing slicer. Don't get me wrong - I love mine and it sees a chunk of pocket time for me even though it is kind of overkill for my typical uses.

That said, if you can get passed the unusual looks the Spyderco Gayle Bradley deserves serious consideration. Mine is in my pocket right now and the combination of steel, F&F and super-smooth opening means that IMHO it should at least be considered...

Good luck finding your knife!
