Hardcore Camping

As previously stated I'm from Maine, so I'm already here! :D All we need to do is wait until things warm up a bit! I wouldn't mind trying some winter camping at some point but I think my lady wouldn't have anything to do with it!

Thanks for the offer, too! I may have to take you up on it!

Winter camping is much cooler :D Just get yourself a good shovel, some candles, and a great sleeping bag. Since you should have great amounts of snow wherever you are in Maine you can play around out in the yard making snow caves and experimenting, when you get cold just go back in the house and get warm.

For sure, Maine is serious weather and serious camping even if your in a State Park. If your just getting started with this stuff you should get in involved with a local group that are experts in cold weather camping and think about taking some rescue classes and things like that.

When you're ready to go to Maine for some good camping, let me know and I'll show you around. I love the Millinocket area and have been there for a dozen or so trips.

Wow... could there be hope for a Maine gathering in the future? I figured I was too far out of the way.

That would be pretty amazing, dude. We're in too good of an area not to. :D

Try the hundred mile wilderness section of the AT. Talk about solitude! Or drive up to Millinocket, bypass it and head for the Gold Road. Drive as far as you will risk then find a friendly looking trail. Spike camping is great up there, especially if you have a canoe for any of the huge lakes or ponds thereabouts. The County ain't too shabby either.

I've spent some time in the North Maine Woods. Keep in mind that it is heavily logged. It is essentially a giant tree farm. That said, there are portions of the NMW that have not been recently cut, and you can get very very remote. As I remember, the rules were reasonable and few, and there are NO rangers looking over your shoulder. There are also no rangers to call should you get into trouble. Both times I was there was in the fall. Finally-- Watch out for the logging trucks. They have the right or way and they fully use it--fast.

If there ever is a Maine gathering let me know well in advance. After all I have to look for a cheap(!) flight, and that might take a while!
