Hardcore Grinder Problem

I still have issues when I taper tangs against the flat platten. The motor will speed up and slow down and if I dont stop it will blow the 20 amp fuse. ( I havent found a 25 amp sloblo locally yet)

I am at a loss as to what the problem is. I shouldnt be having these problems with a 7 year old grinder and a baldor motor. I dont know if something is binding up in the beam or how free the wheel is supposed to turn without power. It doesnt seem to be binding at all. When i grind with the 10" contact wheel it works fine. I will try laying into it with the contact wheel and see what it does.

So far I replaced the speed controller (there was nothing wrong with the current one so now I have a spare), cleaned and tightened all the connections, blew out the motor and upped the fuse to 20 amps. I have new brushes on order even tho they dont "appear" to be the problem.

The fuse size should cause the motor to speed up and slow down when pressure is applied to it.

anyone else with a hardcore have these issues?

I will probably end up taking the beam off and sending the motor in to be tested. I have 20 knives that have to be done by Christmas and this isnt making it very easy.

Michael,
That sounds like the speed controller is the issue there, maybe not adjusted correctly. How much trouble would it be for you to put your old one back on, bearing it is operational.

I posted this on another forum but I thought it might help others who read it here too.

Okay, I dug out some old paperwork from when I was putting together my disc sander. This is for a Minarik contro, but I would bet it's the same for yours. The pods in mine from left to right go Signal Max, Sig Min, Max Spd, Min Spd, Torque, IR Comp. The one you need to adjust is IR Comp. The IR Compensation determines the degree the motor speed is held constant as the motor load changes. To set this to specs you need a hand held tach, and some other equiptment you most likely don't have. So, it sounds like your's is set to high, so turn it counter clockwise until the speed doesn't change under load. If you go to far you will notice a lower max speed.
Good luck,
Joe
