They will definitely lift more than a standard wedge. I use them in tandem with plain ones a lot, since the hardheads are heavier and more $$. When the all plastic is bound tight, I can almost always get a little more with the hardhead.

Those weaver sheaths are pretty good. I like that they fit the big bits on Jerseys and Connies.
 
This old Winchester is a hard poll also. Not sure what the thing started out as, it has a wide eye but about the same length as a boys axe but it was never 2 1/4 lbs. It weighs just under three now haft and all. The haft it is on is about 22" and it has been well hung and filed in the past. I would guess its drove a wedge or two but it is on the light side.
