Hardening 1095

Hello All-
I just wanted to let you know that thanks to all of you, my first hardening/tempering project was a success. I have been waiting to get my pyrometer hooked up to my gas kiln, and last night I did that.
I heated the clamp halves to 1475 and tried to hold that temp for about 8 minutes. I was able to stay within 25 degrees. I then quenched in oil, and tempered in the oven 2 times at 400 degrees. The file just barely leaves a mark, and it squeaks nicely.

Now to make a knife!

Milt,

You could have "snap tempered" at 300-325F. Would have pulled strain out and left the steel a little harder than the 400F temper... not like what you did doesn't work... just is.
