I'm using Cariboo Blade's tutorial for doing a stock removal hook knife. On the tutorital he anneals, shapes, then takes it to a razor hone before bending the hook in. Apparently it's much easier to hone before bending. He then hardens by placing the blade in a blanket of Durawool, getting it to a cherry red, being careful to keep the flame from the edge, then quenches. Well.. seems too variable to me.. so I'm going to use my kiln. But doesn't it seem like there will be a very good chance of cracking the blade at the edge doing it this way.. having the razor edge and then quenching? I'm going to try it because I'm not sure I CAN get that kind of edge grind on a hook shaped blade.. but what do you folks think? Am I gonna crack this blade? I will post a pic later if that helps....
