I was playing around with this digital camera here and I discovered that getting a good knife pic without a lot of thought and setting up damned hard work!

Anyway, this is a quick snap that was, not to put too fine a point on it, the best of a bad bunch. I can see I'm going to have to do some work here ...

OK, just discovered a couple of things about the camera. I THINK this might be an improvement ...

Here are some threads that have covered photography for knives, especially lighting.

There are also photography forums on some of the other knife forums around the internet you could check out for info on shooting knife pics.
Custom Knife Directory photography forum is one of them.

Here's a picture of a setup used IIRC by Steve Sando to shoot knife pictures. The picture is taken by aiming the camera lens through the notch cut in the edge of the tub (shown inside the red circle). The translucent sides of the tub diffuse the light from the lights onto the subject laying on the bench under the tub.

Intereting stuff Rok, thanks for that. I wasn't really trying to get into the knife photography business, just the odd decent snap od what I've got lying around. That tub idea looks interesting.

One thing I've discovered is that flouro lights are about the worst thing for knife pics!

I think the pics are pretty good. No glare....I'd use a different background, tho.....New cameras take some time to get the knack of focus and distance. The green jester/ladybug? is out of focus in the second. You got it nailed at the end with the frn lines well defined.
Looks good, I think, all of them :)

Best wishes with the camera
Tom
