HI. i have gotten some blades back from heat treat, and try to check the hardness with hardness files. the 50 rockwell file can make some small scatches but its not so i can feel the scratch, but my question is, is it then possible it could be 59 rockwell as i asked for?

What's the steel, and how was it heat treated. Does it have decarb on the surface. So many variables and so little info. Plus the file are not a good way to check for an accurate hardness. Do you have a reasion to doubt the hardness your heat treated tested it at?

When you send blades out for heat treating a description of steel should be included with a Target Hardness so the Heat Treat can be performed to meet your Specification. I have no doubt that a reputable company would send back anything that was not tested to meet your order. I agree with JT that files are not a reliable test too many variables. A precision Rockwell hardness tester is needed to give specific RC hardness numbers a file will tell you it's hard or soft not specific RC numbers.

Hi, i have handsanded the blade to 400 grit before testing, i is a private person that have heat treated the blades made of 12c27, (with cryo)
I have made knives of D2 for a long time so am used to more tough steel.

i bought a set of those years ago, i found them hard to decipher, and inconsistent results. i rely on the 2X4 chop test twice and still shaves afterward. yup, i have actually sat there for over a half hour and chopped through 2x4's with a 3 1/2" blade hunting knife :p

I think I will also test the edge, just with cutting alot of cardboard, and then see if it stil can take hair of my arm :)
