I could call and ask, but though someone here may know.

Is the hardness the same on all the Mule 2's in M4 ? And what is the hardness?

Thanks alot

Me too. I also asked in the Mule Team sticky thread. Perhaps its a Spyderco secret :)

Rc of 58-63 according to their product page
I also noticed the large interval on hardness.
Guess it probably means it is difficult to get consistent hardness for that steel. This is a pretty uncommon (in knife making) steel after all.

Just wondering if anyone knows how tough is the knife at that hardness, how does it compare to more common steels?

The description of the steel is all the way down at the bottom.

Thanks
I saw that and I'm pretty sure thats the recommended hardness range for the steel. Not the range of the Mules.

I wonder what hardness spyderco decided to go with? 58 and 63 would be a very differant blade. I would guess they went with a 61/62 since a smaller thin blade.

That whole paragraph reads more like a manufacturer's description of their steel, not the description of Spyderco's Mule knife.

So I think that is the common potential range for this steel not what the hardness that Spyderco made for the Mule.

Either of us could be correct, but I'm confident my interpretation is more likely. :o

edit...Ken already answered this...didn't see when typing.

Crucible have it at around 58 up to 66.
Thats quite a big diffrence i wonder how much of a diffrence will be seen from blade to blade.

For a knife that size, I hope they make it on the harder end of the scale. Maximize edge retention and there is no need to beat on it with a hammer!

Hi Ken,

They would all be within a 1 point range. Our heat treater is quite good and usually maintains one point.

Crucible gives a large range, but they also gave us a recommendation. Scott Devanna is our info source at Crucible. He's also a "Blade-sports" competitor so he's familiar with the steel and its performance properties. We would have gone with his recommedation. I'll test one on Monday.

Thanks Sal:thumbup:

I'm watching this thread with great interest and with same interest the result of your test. Thanks for asking the question Kenn 44!

This is a nice answer, Sal. Correctly said.
I would expect something like 61 +/- 1, i. e. in the Rc 60-62 range, because a knife is rather small.

Sal, somebody claimed a M4 to be a rather brittle (nozh?) - any experience about toughness?

I still wait for Tuff in 3V. I got recently some fixed Fehrman´s knives in CPM 3V. Extreme toughness and the edge retention as ATS-34. Sal, you have a chance to make the toughest and strongest folder with a compression or ball lock.

Hi Ken,

Rc 62-63.

I love it!. Get all the performance it's capable of. Maximum wear resistance, edge stability. That is better than I was hoping for. More wear resistant than M2, yet tougher at the same time. This is becoming one of my new favorite steels for my uses, which is no heavy chopping, or extreme hard use. Cutting, sharpening, cutting, sharpening, etc.

I'll have to take one of them down into darksider only territory. It's calling me, despite it's fairly high carbide percentage. I love that tungsten, and don't get overly excited over large chromium numbers ( ZDP being an anomoly).

If it only had some cobalt it would be perfect, but damn near is anyway.

I'd really like to get another. Joe

BTW, this sharpens really well. I like it, did I mention that?
