Hardness of S35VN - 58/59 versus 59/60

I should have listened to your warning. Now I want multiple of the Bark River Knives in additional to the CRKs I want. This site is going to cost me a LOT of money.
"Rampless" Bravo 1 in S35VN or Bravo 1.25 in 3V. Solid choices. Thank me later

There's going to be some varying opinions because nobody knows if they got 58 or 59HRC.

58 is just too soft for S35vn.
Edge retention really suffers from what it could be. One point makes a big difference, and those that got 59 would have noticed an improvement.

As far as "softer for easy to sharpen" not sure I understand that way of thinking...
I don't find it any easier to sharpen, but you're gonna have to sharpen it a hell of a lot more.

59-60HRC is the perfect range for S35 and it performs exceptionally at that hardness.

Thanks CRK for making the change, and with it, making the knives that much better....

I am amazed at all the fuss which essentially relates to a whopping 1 RC in hardness.

It actually relates to a range of 58 to 60HRC.

The "fuss" would make complete sense if you used S35 @ 58HRC for a week, and then that same knife but with a blade @ 60HRC the following week...

Its a "range". Which essentially relates to a 1 and at a stretch 2 HRC difference. I have used both as mentioned for a month at a time doing the same chores and notice zero difference.

A few I had tested by Bos were at 57.5 (pre 2013) so when I got them back at 59.5, the difference was big. On my new insingos (2015), the edge has been great with none of the issues I've experienced before. I'm definitely one who has enjoyed the change.

I'm another one that can tell the difference as my older 21 is noticeably quicker to lose it's edge compared to my late 2013 25. I have several years experience alternating them as they were my only EDC from 2013 till last month. It's possible they are 2-3 points apart.

If anything the 58-59 RC blades are easier to strop and maintain and to resharpen. Who are we kidding, most of us don't use our CRK hard enough to justify the higher RC let alone feel the difference. I strop my Sebie daily anyways... I'm OCD that way ;)

I do!!!

I hope the issue of "underhardening" has been solved for the fixed blades, because the edge toughness issue is very noticeable on the bigger models like the Green Beret and the Pacific doing more things than "just cutting".

I think both Bill Harsey's designs and Chris Reeve's quality are just too good to be stained by that issue.
