Hardness tester blocks

I just won an auction for a hardness tester. I'd like to get a calibration block to make sure it's accurate. I'd like something around 60 to 65 rc. I just don't know what the numbers means. Example hr 30n 78 or hr 30t 75 or 15t 87.5. I'm assuming the bigger number is the rc value but what is the smaller number and letter? I also see that some have a tolerance.

Also does it matter if I'll be testing in rockwell c what type of plate I get?

I hope the tester you won is not a "Superficial" tester because those numbers ending in "N" & "T" denote superficial "Surface" testing only. The tester used for Knives should be HRA, HRB, HRC scale tester and the "C" scale is the value we looking for "61RC" for example.

I think your right about those numbers being for superficial testing. The tester I got is not superficial. Unfortunately it may only have the ball tip. I can't really tell from the photo. Well see when it arrives.

Ames tip are dame expensive.

The diamond penetrator might seem expensive but just relative to the cost of a bench top Rockwell machine and portability of the Ames. Seems like all of our equipment is expensive in some way or another if we Have To Have It:rolleyes::D

ya but the ames ones are 450 us. cant find them anywhere but Ames. maybe ill be lucky and it'll be diamond.

$450, and if you picked up your unit for a good price you still save vs $2600-ish for new.
I'm watching an Ames model 2 right now, thanks for posting, helps me know what to look for.

I certainly understand the availability of Ames only for the diamond penetrator however you purchased portability versus a table model Wilson Rockwell even used can be upwards of 1K and clones if serviceable down around $300-700 range. You have to bite the bullet sometimes on certain parts if you didn't ask before hand if it came with the Diamond...the Clones/Rockwell's have diamonds as low as $20 sometimes...
