Hardness tester calibration

Hey guys, just recently bought a used Enco hardness tester.
It's in real good condition with all the weights and a box with a couple of indenters. One is a diamond penetrator for Rockwell C and one is a ball for Rockwell a and b. I only need it for C if my research is correct.

It also came with a couple of calibration blocks.

I'm getting high results. Too high as in 70 when I should be at 60-62.
I've tested it against the blocks and against some recently treated steel from Peters.

Would a good first step to be to purchase a new penetrater?
The one that came with it is marked "fine 1022" on it.

You don't need a penetrator, you need to adjust the machine. Call enco or check the website it may have the manual on there in PDF format. It will show you how to adjust the machine to read what the blocks do.

Thanks for the advice, I read the manual and tried to find some stuff online.
I went ahead and ordered a new diamond a day or so after posting this in case the one that came with it was chipped.

Is there a reason the diamond I have says fine 1022 on it?
It reads consistently high.

Also the test blocks I got with it have two different numbers on them and look like they were engraved with the numbers with a hand engraver.

Most likely it just needs calibration, but if the point of the pentrator was broke so it was flatter than should be, I'd think that would also make it read high. Here's a good price. I ordered one for a spare and have swapped it and didn't change calibration any at all..

I just sent you a email - or send me a email, I've wrote up calibration procedures for the HR150A that several folks say have helped. I can also send you manuals for the HR150A - I have two different versions of the manual which both have some good points.

Good to hear, that's the exact diamond I bought.
I replied to your email Ken, thanks for the help!

Ken,

Can you post the calibration procedure for the HR150A here or send me a private message with the info? Mine is working fine at the moment but would like to have the procedure in case I run into problems later.

I'm happy to Marc - Allow me to start a new thread so it will be easier to find in future for reference and perhaps other folks can review, comment, and we can make it better. I also sent you an email for you to respond to since sending email via the forum doesn't allow attachments.

Ken,

I didn't get the email. You can reach me at aldrich.kt(at)outlook(dot)com.

Ooops - I think you're right, I forgot to send email. My cousin and his wife from the far north country (north Alabama) came to visit yesterday afternoon and I got busy with them. I suspect I forgot to send email. Thanks for reminding me.

I had meant to get a new thread started yesterday but when company arrived I didn't get the post made. When they leave tomorrow (Sunday) I'll make a point to get the new thread started.

A tool sticky would be nice with all the questions on grinders, ovens, and other tools.
