Hardness testing of a sampling of production and custom knives

Thanks for posting the results - always interesting to see hardnesses of various knives.

Interesting thoughts to do some mor"common" items, I've also been thinking about doing some of my kitchen knives, but they are a bit large to tote around work.

:D

Yes its over the specified hardness, so I double checked it. Repeats were within 0.2 Rc...

Will add a few not in the rankings.

CRK Umumzaan - S30V - 59.5 HRC

Spyderco CF Military - M390 - 61 HRC

Hi Rapt_up,

If you merge all the lists together, then it might be worth annotating each entry with its source for measurement? Since as knarfeng mentioned, the calibration standards are +/-1 for HRC.

Sincerely,
--Lagrangian

I was just thinking about that and if I wanted to complie the data into a "master" or or if this thread in its entirety would be ok instead.

Anyone else (especially other data contributors) have feelings on this, as well as how we give credit where due for testing? Add a column for tester?

Do something in S35VN!

This is not a steel test, but rather a collection of data points on how well "specifications" for hardness (especially from commercial knife companies) relate to actual hardness values of the knives they produce.
It may or may not tell us anything about how a particular steel in a particular knife model will do for edge holding, but it does tell us something about a company's ability to get blades to targets, and how the particular knives tested will likely perform.

I am happy to test any knife I have or any that people want to send to me and have me put a dimple on their knife. Some can be hidden, on some folders, but generally fixed blades cannot have the test hidden. I do not own a knife with S35VN steel.

This has the potential to be a VERY interesting thread. Thank you very much for posting this conducting these tests, and for posting results. I predict a very long, interesting thread! :)

Added a Bradford Orwell. Also have a spreadsheet. wondering about how best to get that on here... Maybe a pic is the best choice.

Fun stuff here.
Id love to play with one of these.
I would test my CRK 21 S35VN and my wifes Manix BD1.
