This meeting was organized as part of another forum, but seeing how it fits so well into the scope of this sub-forum, I couldn't help but provide some posts here for the members who like to stay within this little enclave.

This is the first ever Hardswoodsman Meet-Up organized by Iz Turley (Turley Knives) and Terry Barney (Midwest School of Bushcraft). Hardswoodsman is a term that Iz came up with after getting tired of seeing so much emphasis of bushcraft being performed in the soft woods. So he started this up, and then booked us in the only forest in the state with pine trees :D Well, as the saying goes, in Missouri, even the softwoods are hard!!!

The meeting was held last weekend in Missouri at the Mark Twain National Forest. On the list of instructionals included: PSK's, fire basics, one stick fire, tarp shelters, knot class, natural cordage, use of big knives, axe safety, bowdrill, hand drill, plant i.d. plus great demo's on dutch oven cooking, fireside stories and great companionship. The instruction provided by Terry and Iz as well as other guest instructors, JCL-MD, Rescue2 and RangerJoe were first rate.

There were a tonne of great give aways in draws and prizes for contests. For the one stick fire contest, Iz gave away one of his coveted custom knives and boy was it a beauty eh? My bud RangerJoe (now renamed RainGearJoe because every time I camp out with him it rains) won the one stick fire challenge. I have to grin because among the variety of contestants, the 2 canuks in attendance took 1st and 3rd place. Good one eh?

Despite the foul weather and 11.5 hr drive, this was one of the better meet-ups I attended. Hope you enjoy some random pictures and videos of the events.

Many thanks to Iz and Terry for hosting such a great event! Long live the Hardwoodsman Meet-Up.

Awesome pics and videos Ken. It was an awesome weekend. Im glad you could come. Tons of skills with the best group of guys I know. I learned a ton, and had a great time. Iz Turley knows his stuff, and Terry is a world class woodsman and instructor.

Tony....You should be jealous. :D

Ken, I am really glad you made it down. It was a pleasure to meet you. Just so you guys know Ken is class act(for a Canoodian). He helped out with the bow and drill practice and is very knowledgeable when it comes to plants. He helped me with a few I had been looking for a few specifics and he was a great help. Gonna start planning next years event soon. Hope to see a few of you there.

Dang! Wish I would have known about this one. I would have loved to been there (in spite of the weather we had last weekend). I could use some more skills!

Hope I can make it to one sometime!

Looks like fun.

Is that British a camouflage pattern? Where does one get those?

EDIT: Oh yeah, I LOVE the grind on those Turley knives. Sharper towards the handle and more convexed up top for chopping. Fantastic.

Turley makes a mean blade and he knows sharp! Bladerique, I think he said he received the pants from Sportsman's guide. They apparently have pads in the knees which makes them good for pray'n and other things....;)

Also I have to add that IAwoodsman is probably one of the most professional instructors I have had the pleasure to speak with. A real stand-up, no BS kind of guy! Would love to take a winter class with his school!

Looks like a very cool event.

Those look like the Eotac "Operator Grade" pants in Algerian Lizard Camo from Sportsman's guide. (If I'm right, they even come with 3/8" thick knee pads)

and I'm with Unit - wish I had known about this before it happened - I could have used a weekend out in the woods.

very cool. Looks like a blast!

What part of Mark Twain natnl forest was it in? I have family down in Carter county (Big Spring/Van Buren area).

You rock, Ken. It was great to meet you finally and thanks again for instructing with Joe on the bow drill class. I can't think of two better guys to teach that class.
No more pine tree and knee pad comments, I'll have to sick burrito boy on you to rip your arms off and beat you with them.
Thanks again to all who taught and participated in the meet, it was one for the ages.
Iz
