Harduse: 275 Adamas vs. 810 Contego

Your wife carries an Adamas?
Not all the time, but the knife is hers -- all 5'1" of her! She was constantly borrowing one of mine to use on short notice, and I got fed up enough to put my foot down and tell her that she had to have her own knife. ;). I was going to order her a custom mini-Grip in blue, but she said I had to get her the knife she really likes ( found that out when I borrowed a 275 to try out).

I had Kent Aldridge from Mad-Jac's Custom Finish & Archery put a deep blue Cerakote on the scales. She gets a silly little grin every time she opens it. I'll have to get one for myself if I want to actually use an Adamas.

I'm not going to lie to you; I feel the need to lay my 710 down and go get an Adamas. lol

Especially if you can make it look like this:

Believe it or not, I'm actually jealous of my wife. I made her knife nicer than any of mine. I need to remedy that, but I have to find someone who can make titanium scales for a 32 Morpho exactly like the G10 ones first.

Oh, after you have them made you should anodize them yourself. It's a lot of fun if you've never done it. Just a few 9v's, some wire and what not and you're set. I did the ti liners on my daughters Benchmade. Very easy to get a lovely blue.

Not the best shot but here's what they look like.

You mean like this? ;)

The biggest downside to the purple and blue is that those colors show fingerprints very easily, and the oils from our prints change the refraction, thus changing the color. Great for looks, not the greatest for actual use unless you like to clean your knife very, very frequently. When I get my own 0801, I'll anodize the grooves and put either a satin or orange peel texture on the flats.

I'm biased. I only own the 810 and love it. It's in my pocket most of the time. The deep carry clip makes it disappear.

own both....adamas is the one id grab if I had only one choice. but usually carry the contego because it slips less when im wearing gloves

I personally like the Contego more, it fits my hand a little better and weighs less. I'm not an ounce counter by any means (I typically carry 2 folders on me at work) but the Adamas just feels too heavy/bulky for anything I'd need it for. It is a tank of a knife and if you need something that beefy then by all means get it but I just don't like the feel of it.

I have had both and still have 2 Contegos! The Adamas is no doubt a good knife. I found the handle to be disproportionately thick for the size/length of the blade. The handle thickness bugged me so much I never carried it and ended up selling it. YMMV though. If you like the thick handle, the Adamas will be a great knife for you. My beater 810 gets a majority of my pocket time of all my larger EDC folders.
This is the same reason I sold my Adamas, just too thick and I also have 2 Contego's that work much better for my needs.

I know it is a bit of work, but Adamas has very thick G10 that can be grinded.

Until recently, I was shying away from Adamas, because it is rather heavy side. I personally like minimum weight in my 3.5"+ folding blade.

I start smoothing out my 810, and it had occurred to me that if Adamas 275 sheds a little bit og G-10 and round the grip a bit, it would feel like narrower handle.

Original grip:

Round off and grind G10 on red oval area, it would narrow the garth of handle. Just to be ambidextrous, I should do both side.

Thickness of G-10:

As you can see, the thickness of G10 is more than 8th of an inch. Make sure not to grind around clip area (easy on pinky and ring finger area), it should work nicely.

Just for comparecent, here is Adamas with Contego.

810 has longer blade, and blade thickness is comparable. So, liner is very close in thickness.

Blade thickness:
810 = .156" / 3.96mm
275 = .160" / 4.06mm

Handle thickness:
810 = .55 / 13.91mm
275 = .73 / 18.54mm
950 = .56 / 14.28mm

So, each G10 handle plates can be ground about 4mm without feeling too thin. I think sanding down would not be too bad.

For harduse will always choose the 275. Built stronger, 1000 times more comfortable and can get a better grip on it, ergo's and design are better, jimping is placed perfectly and very effective( and not super painful like 810), blade deploys better and is smoother (at least for me).Very, very much like the 810 but choose the 275 over it any day. Only reason would say that 810 has advantage over 275 is the m4. Can you imagine a M4 275? That would literally make me cream in my pants. I really wish they would have made a sprint run of the 275 with m4. Have 2 275's and will probably get another. Hope Benchmade makes something similar to it with M4 in the near future. I have to buy a dremel soon cause there's tons of stuff i need one for. I'm going to grind off all the terribly painful jimping on the 810's liners or at least gring them down alot. An uncomfortable knife that is painful to hold is probably one of the worst things a knife could have and the 810's jimping on the liner's is the most uncomfortable thing i've seen on a knife and all in all is the only big problem for me.Love the design,scales and blade shape on the 810 just prefer the 275 for reason's said. But the 810 is one i won't get rid of but will have 3 275's in the future.

I don't thump the 810 so I can't comment on that (versus D2), but I really appreciate the edge retention of M4. I can use the Contego for a month at work with stropping maintenance and still have what my coworkers consider a sharp knife. Edge stability is also excellent for the substrates I cut. I sharpen M4 to just under 30° (inclusive) and it performs flawlessly.

Aside from ergonomics that bother some (I haven't touched mine), the 810 is like a dream custom for me. It's such a great knife in nearly every way.

Yeah, CPM-M4 is really more rear resistant, harder, and tougher than standard D2. But, it is all in geometry of the blade. 810 blade is designed to be agile, almost for thrust cuts, where Adamas blade is more hatchet like use.
