Hardware store handle VS Ordering one

My axe needs a new handle and I dont really want to spend 30 or 40 dollars ordering one. I know I can get a GB or similar haft for it. The hardware store has them for cheap but will they last?

I think as long as it's good Hickory or Ash and the grain is nice and straight at both ends of the handle you'll be ok at the hardware. I'm spoiled here in the boonies, there's a guy who makes every type of handle and haft for a reasonable price and has a pattern lathe. He uses Ask and or Hickory.

Regards
