Hardware Store Sodbuster: Why I'd Buy it Again

Welcome to the Traditional forum, and congrats on your new Sodbuster! If you like the Jr., you'll love the full size (at least, I know I do... I prefer larger pocket knives in general).
Enjoyed reading your post; you seem very well spoken, and thoughtful. I wish more 16-year-old kids exhibited those traits.

rescue from the dark and dangerous world of all things black, tanto, and serrated

Kudos to you.....very well written post.

Very good, LM64.

I also found my stainless Case Soddie Jr. at the 'hardware store' (the one where all the employees wear those red vests). My impressions were very similar to yours (though, I was about 3x your age at the time ;)). It's one of my favorites now; great blade grind, edge was very good when new, and even better after a little TLC. One of my best slicers. :)

I know just how you feel LeatherMan, I'm 19, and really started to get into transnationals around my 18th birthday i picked up a Yeller Nut and fell in love. Then once i got a decent job i moved on over to GEC and never looked back. Even though i remember picking up my first ever traditional around the age of 12ish with the $30 i saved up i bought a Buck Stockman(cant find it and super angry at myself). But i love the feeling that my grandfather and his father all carried these patterns and went through hell and back with these blades then i can too..

Well congrats on your first traditional and good luck with many to come.

^Same here. I got my first slippy at 17-18 and have never looked back. Leatherman, you have to try and snatch up a Bullnose when you get the chance, it is one of my all-time favorites....I even like it better than my #42 Missouri Trader...

It's good to know that I am not the only young one here :D

Am I the youngest in the traditionals section? I'm 15. Leatherman - very well written post, nice to see someone around my age thinks the same way.I wish some of my friends were more like you;)

Anyways, congrats on your first traditional.

Very nice thread.... while I am certainly not the youngest here a sodbuster jr and a buck 112 were my only knives for many years. Still have the 112, recently replaced the sodbuster with a yellow cv... you're doing very well!

Dang, now I need to grab one of my sodbusters for a turn in the pocket. There is something to be said for their simple utility.

Wow!

First, let me say to you LeatherMan, that was a very, very well written post. I enjoyed reading every bit of it. And the sodbuster is a great go-to knife. Big enough to handle anything from opening UPS boxes to field dressing a deer. And I love it that some young people are here on the traditional form. I really didn't think there was anyone but us old farts.

The sodbuster is a simple knife that is like the Smith and Wesson model 10 revolver. Everyone is looking to the new slick back wonder guns of the month, but the old revolver is just as good protection now as when it came out in 1899. The sodbuster is as hard working a knife as it was 150 years ago when it was used in Germany and points east as a folding butcher knife.

Sometimes old and simple is not a bad thing.

Carl.

^Coming from you sir, this is the greatest of compliments. I've read a number of your stories and write ups, and they are what pushed me to do one of my own. I'm much obliged to you.

Nice post LM64, well done!

I have two Case Sodbuster Jrs (CV&SS), plus the GEC Bullnose and even though the GEC is considered by many to be a step above, I still feel drawn to the Case versions. It's the blade shape and hollow grind.

Great post, I just bought two Case Sodbusters SS/CV. Always wanted something traditional and people seem to have an affinity for the sodbuster. It will be interesting to see the difference between steels.I Put an edge on the SS and its a shaver. I copied the post and was thinking I would pass those words down when these knives find their way to family or friends as seems to happen with knives:).

Very well written post. If you are thinking of picking up writing as a career I think you will be quite successful. Enjoy your new knife. Maybe one that that sodbusters will be passed on to your own kids :)

It was a pleasure reading your post, Leatherman. You made me rip my Sodbuster out of my pocket and start fondling it, as I read the rest of your post! You have your head screwed on correctly, sir! If there were more kids with your mindset....

I man after my own heart! What a great analogy. Especially considering how much I like traditional folders and good ol Smith & Wesson wheel guns!

Congratz!
Do yourself a favor and look at an AG Russell Rancher or Cowboy. These are my favorite Sodbuster-like folders.
