here is my first try at chain Damascus.
12.5 inches long.
8.25 blade.
Wrought iron guard and butt.
15n20, Harley chain, and 1084 powder for the steels.
San-mai construction. elk horn handle.
What do you think?

Looks great! It's very interesting to see that the pattern of the chain is still clearly recognizable!

Very uniquely forged !!! I managed to get a piece of Harley Damascus from a smith many years ago. It was a very quick seller in a folder I made. The patterning certainly wasn't near as attractive as yours !!! Thanks for the look ! Frank

I love chain and cable Damascus. The patterns are very attractive. Yours is especially nice since the pattern is very bold and recognizable.

That's crazy that this was your first time trying chain damascus and it came out so perfect. Great job!

*****Does anybody here know if one can do the same with a chain from an ordinary bicycle?********
(I tried it once a long time ago and failed but I'm sure it was more my fault than the chains :D )

Sorry for second post. But was curious how did u do it. Did u take the links aprt and stack? First time to see it done this way.

Hi.
Thanks for the replys.
To make the billet I started with a center of saw blade steel. Then put 2 lengths of chain stacked on top of each other at each side.
I put this in a 1.5 inch square tube and filled the space with 1084 powder.I used a 20 ton air/hyd jack to press the tube together. I worked it down to 1/2 inchs thick.
I surface ground the tube off to expose the pattern and forged it into a 1/4 inch bar.Pretty much stock removal from there on.
As you can see the core stayed centered pretty well. It's a little of but it was only 3/32 thick to start.
