I am a really big fan of the harness knife pattern, and was looking to get one, but the only company I know of that makes one is schatt and morgan, and theirs is a tad pricey. I may end up buying the S&M somwhere down the line, but I was just wondering if I had any other options.

Here is a picture of the S&M that I found on google:

I've got one by GEC, and I love it. Equal end cigar with pinched and fluted bolsters like the one in your picture, smooth yellow bone, 1095 steel, 3" clip main blade, and leather punch. I wish I had a picture I could post.

Heres a site where you can find these, and an excellent dealer as well:

I have the Schatt and Morgan Cattle pattern, which is just like the one in your picture, but with a spey blade in addition to the spear and punch. Great knife in every way, but I think they only come with 420 stainless blades.

Great Eastern Cutlery also makes a harness jack in all three of their lines (GEC, Northfield, Tidioute). However, they are every bit as pricey as Schatt & Morgan.

Longbeachguy beat me to it.

We can thank our good friend Waynorth for the resurgence of the harness jack and the knife in that lovely image you posted above.

I have a Schatt & Morgan teardrop harness Jack in amber wormgroove bone that I picked up from collectorknives.net. It is an SFO the price was $69.00 plus shipping which isn't bad for a S&M.

The one your showing in the pic is 1095steel and the teardrop is 420H.C.

I have one of Waynorth's revived S&M Harness Jacks. It is perfection. Fit and finish are flawless, and 1095 is my favorite carbon steel. It is absolutely top drawer!

What do you guys use the punch for since you're giving up a usable shorter blade for the punch? Also pushing with that punch blade seems like a good way to have it close on your hand but maybe its just poor technique.

I do alot of whittling and woodcrafting with my pockeknives, so I like the ability to drill small holes. It also comes in handy with leather stuff, which is another one of my many knife-realted hobbies.

The fact that it is 1095 is a big selling point for me, 1095 is a great user steel by my way of thinking. The 3 5/8 length is also good, because I have tossed around the idea of adding a saw from an SAK to the pattern, so if I end up doing that, it would be a smooth transition because alot of SAK's are that size.

I've used the punch on the Schatt Harness, on a SAK and a Rough Rider for making holes in the bottom of thick plastic flower-pots for extra drainage. The tool works a treat provided you don't 'stab' with it but angle it slightly and work it slowly. Not closed up on me yet....

Never had a punch close on me and I've been using them on either harness jacks, scout knives or vic farmer saks for years. The awl is invaluable in the field for drilling small hole, as well as making holes in materials to allow items to be stiched together. I,ve used em to drill hole through tire tread to make sandals, drill hole through bark to make a knife sheath as well as making holes in leather to make repairs to equipment. The awl also makes a great scrapper to remove small thorns and bee stingers.

S&M Harness Jack a la Erickson:

Looking at some old Norvell-Shapleigh catalog images (page 304 of the Mayes "Knife Album"), I came upon a 3 3/4" "half congress" pen with one blade and a punch, available as either Diamond Edge or Empire (to add to its unique design - it's a "sleeveboard" congress with rattail bolsters (the blade bolster is wider than the punch bolster)). Does anyone have one of these? Has anyone ever even *seen* one? I feel this is definitely one for Charlie. :p

Wish I did, Dwight! That pattern has escaped me . . . .so far!!!

Are there any with a long blade, short blade and punch? I would really get behind one of these (or is it called something else?).

Kris, I'm not familiar with any harness knives with that selection (but Charlie will know). Sounds like you're closely describing an equal end cattle knife (or stock knife). You can find them with a spear master blade, punch and possibly a sheepfoot, spey or pen blade depending on the maker.
