looking at buying a Harpy. What is the disadvantage of the serrations with every day cutting. Also any word on if they are going to be an updated version on this knife. Thanks for info.

The disadvantages that I see with serrations are:
The teeth tend to snag on some materials, increasing effort over a properly sharpened plain edge.
The teeth are chisel ground, which makes it more difficult to cut in a straight line, as the material being cut does not press evenly on both sides of the blade.
When cutting some materials, the serrations will leave grooves in the surface. No big deal for demolition work, bozo no-no for finish work.
I've not heard anything about updates to the Harpy, but I'm not a big hawkbill fan, so I don't pay much attention to that model.

I'm not familiar with the Harpy. I did a google search on it and it looks like a nice knife. I personally do not like serrations. They do their job for cutting rope and wood, but I strip a lot of wire in my job and for that serrations are not good at all. Say 1/0 aluminum wire with a serrated edge will just dig into the aluminum. A hawk bill is a great wire skinning knife.

I longed after the harpy when i first saw it. I Finally got one and now in all honesty it mostly collects dust on the shelf. Dont get me wrong its a beautiful knife with amazing fit and quality like all spydercos but being a serrated hawk bill it has its place and for me thats not in my EDC. If your general tasks involve fast aggresive cutting of rope and netting go for it, other wise your money would be better sent on another spyderco. If your hell bent on a hawk bill you might want to look into the straight edge salt

The only problem with the Harpy is the SS handle, it is slippery. Send it to STR and have him cut grooves in the handle, then bead blast it. Problem solved.
