Well here I am reading the book Hannibal, you remember Silence of the Lambs and low and behold a Spyderco knife is used."The bright blade appears in his hand as though he had sprouted it to replace his sixth finger. The knife is called a Harpy and it has a serrated blade shaped like a talon". Sound like negative advertising to me....

"Sprouted it to replace his sixth finger?" Unless Dr. Lecter had a sixth finger at one time, that isn't even written well!

I'm pretty troubled that this knife (and the Civilian, I hear) appear in this book and this context. Far better that someone Dr. Lecter was attacking thoroughly ruin his day (and his dinner) by rapidly deploying a Civilian and nailing him before running away to get a LEO!

Awww, you know popular culture caters to the sheep amongst us. Good civilians in these tales count on cell phones and luck. I believe in making my own luck.

Dr. Lecter may be a psychopath, but he`s also extremely intelligent. So it doesn`t suprise me that he has made an intelligent choice of high-tech matter separators. He`s always very well thought out.

Spyderco has made several positive appearances in film already. One negative appearance isn`t going to tarnish anyone. (IMHO)

PS: I don`t recall the Chianti industry being negatively impacted my Dr. Lecter`s unusual use of their product!

Or fava bean growers!

In Silence of the Lambs, Lecter has six fingers on each hand, and I believe six toes...though this isn't mentioned in the movie, nor in Harris' first novel w/Lecter called "Red Dragon" (MUCH better than Lambs...)...

I like to see Spyderco knives in movies or mentioned. It doesn't alter my view of the tool either way.

However, remember that after appearing in dramatic movies, switchblades, nunchaku, and balisongs were all outlawed primarily because of how they were represented in film by idiot legislators, and not because they are really any more dangerous than more mundane tools.

But if it were up to me, "A Spyderco in every movie and crime novel!"

Unfortunately, it's often the sheep who will go to great lengths to 'watchdog' everything from books to movies. That's how first switchblades, then nunchaku and balisongs were outlawed. And not because they are any more dangerous than more mundane, common tools.

But I myself to love to see Spydies represented in the media!

Oops! Sorry! Posted twice!)

The first post didn't show up right away. Seems to be a weird delay.

I was under the impression that the good Dr had 6 fingers on one hand only... but it's been a while since I've read Red Dragon and Silence. Hannibal was definately not what I expected.

Anyhow, I didn't even connect the Harpy to Spyderco until after I finished the book....
