Harris publications out of business

A lot of good people are out on the street now with no real warning. Told them all on a Thursday they would have to have their offices cleaned out by 6:00 pm the next day. No word on what happens to subscribers, the money owed to writers, or refunds to advertisers but that is probably all lost in the bankruptcy.

Not the first time they have done this sort of thing, but likely the worst one. Personally I felt the way the Harris Publications executives handled the situation with Tactical Knives magazine back in 2014, and the way they treated their writers then, demonstrated a distinct lack of honor, integrity, and character. At this point I am glad it left a bad enough taste in my mouth that I just ignored emails inviting me to write for other Harris projects.

A few things their execs did left me shaking my head. I can't help but wonder if things like having an art layout guy that saw violence in accessing coconut milk didn't contribute to their problems :D I hope he never finds himself in a real survival situation, it may redefine the concept violence for him...

It is for sure the worst Brian. They are liquidating everything in the office, all furniture, computers, printers etc. etc. in bankruptcy court to pay creditors. Harris is totally gone.

Damn, I know there were some really good people involved with that company, I had the pleasure of meeting a few of them. I hope they find new employment quickly without their lives being turned upside-down.

Read that they intend to give partial refunds on subscriptions. Magazine publishing is a tough road to hoe and people don't want to pay for e-subscriptions.

22, Can I ask where you read that? I have yet to see anything official from the Harris office, just second hand news on the web.

I would hate to be in the publication business today. Any part of it from production, printing through selling. How long will it be before the big bookstores go the way of Blockbuster? Prices are high on books and magazines yet the profit margins for the merchants are incredibly thin.

I read that on the THR gun forum and mentioned by Dpris who is a part time author and contributor to the sporting magazines. He started a thread on Harris publications. If by chance it is not there, it would be on the Firing Line (TFL) gun forum. These are two that I frequent.

It's a shame. They really did have some good guys working for them, and gals too!

A piece of outdoors history has gone away!

I enjoyed my time associated with them. TK and the stories from Dan Shectman, Jeff Randall, Steven Dick and Terrill Hoffman got me interested in the business on a whole new level. Then writer's like Tim Stetzer, Brian Griffin and Joe Flowers from these parts were a refreshing new direction for the magazine.

Thank all!

Thanks 22. Read it all. Denis said they were going to make good on 50,000 subs. Given the number of magazines involved that must mean a lot of people are going to be up a creek. Not sure how they are going to pick the lucky ones. Draw a name out of a hat? :)

Still many are coming out better than in the more notable cutlery bankruptcies.. Schrade and Camillus. Well as the marketplace abhors a vacuum, someone will fill the void on at least a smaller scale. Hopefully. There are a lot of writings still in the pens of those authors. And quite a bit of consumer interest.

Damn, I guess Combat Handguns will no longer be printed either?? Was really bummed when they canceled Tactical Knives a few years ago.

All Harris magazines have ceased publication. There were a certain number in the pipeline when they closed their doors but that will run out when the current issues are pulled off the rack.

After Houston Price of Knife World Magazine fame passed away a few years ago, Mark Zalesky bought the rights and is now publishing Knife Magazine. I'm a subscriber, and with monthly input from B. Levine, F. Trzaska, B. Voyles and the like, I'm all in. It's been a great magazine so far, and gets my strong recommendation. http://www.knifeworld.com/knifemagazine.html
