Harumi Hirayama folders

I had heard about the Koi but had not ever seen images so thanks for posting those as they are truly magnificent.

Hi Murray,

You're a lucky man. An enviable set: Fixed and folder. Nice!

Dan, What a marvelous set. Wow. And Tomo's photography makes me cry. ;)

STeven, I see exactlty what you mean. I can't see her changing a thing. Her shapes comes from the 'uncarved block' sense of simplistic shapes. It's her adornments that she makes intricate.

She was at the Chicago show with her mother and left a few knives on the table with representative prices on display. (They were sold, though.) This stirred up a few onlookers to the point of madness! She don't know.

Sorry to hear she won't be at Boston. Ahhh, well.

For more views of here work, here are about 12 images that I've acquired: Click here

^^ (BTW, the LAST photo with the set in a box: The folder was stolen in shipping transit back to the client. Only that one. Go figure. It's unmistakable. Keep your eyes open.)

I come from the "knife in totality" perspective, Coop.

If the basic knife is not interesting, all the adornment in the world will not make it appealing to me.

Fully understand how many savvy knife collectors go goofy for Harumi's work, I'm just not one of them....and because the blades look like sharpened butter knives, find them fundamentally unappealing.

Best Regards,

Steven Garsson

no need for the crude comparison, a simple "its not for me" will suffice.

You should be one of the last people on the planet to attempt chastising me, Dan Favano.

...I've said worse to you about Harumi's work in person....you like her work, you like her....fine...what I cannot stand are the apologists who say things like Coop did for the mismatch between the blades and the handles...it's absolutely mind boggling.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

the blades are plain, but they look very finely finished, and the shapes don't seem to me to contrast so abruptly to the handle as to be objectionable.
I'd even go so far as to say that the simple and disarming blades say a lot about where the knifemaker is coming from, from a design perspective.

I don't disagree that it would be interesting to see a collaboration between this artist and someone like Jess Horn, as you pointed out. But to me it seems that she is making knives that jive, for her. And to those who collect her knives too, no doubt.

Perhaps she would take a commission for a knife with the blade shapes and treatments that you are suggesting she explore here, Steven. I would be very interested to see the outcome, should anyone ever take an interest in such an endeavour.:)

Personally, since I don't use butter, I can just sit back here and love her handles, STevie. And how dare the apologists.

Best regards,

Bob(by) Betzner

EDIT: Dan, I still think I should have kept that "Big Knife with Hook" I won the drop for. Now that I think about it, it's not a purist, functional knife either, is it? But "cutting edge", yeah!

Plainly put, Lorien, Harumi's work is outside of my tax bracket.

Bobby, if the apologists were daring, they would request(and get) sexier blades put on those handles.

PM sent. I don't want to share my true feelings with the public.
