Highly collectible Harumi Hirayama "Pico" fixed blade. Harumi's work is exceptionally hard to come by and when a piece emerges from a safe somewhere, it is likely to be expensive. She makes both folders and fixed blades, and has made some pairings of this "Pico" style, but finding a single one in ivory and with an engraved silver bolster, well, it's a real find.
Harumi is most recently published in the front of Knives 2012 in the article on a few women knifemakers. Her work is published in Darom's books, Weyer's books, ie, a VERY published maker. The Pico model is one of her "simpler" pieces, though much time is involved in the inlay, goldwork, etc.
I've included an image of Harumi's table (thanks to Murray White!) at the 2008 Solvang show. On her table (upper right) is a Pico in redwood, this size. And it doesn't include an engraved silver bolster. Note the materials on her card, and the pricing. Materials are very similar, ie, abalone, black and gold pearl, 18k gold pins and inlays, shell, etc.
A Pico is almost always 5 1/4" overall with a 2 1/4" blade of 440-C, bolsters of .950 silver and usually in ebony or ivory. Ones I've seen made in recent years are generally ebony (also redwood), probably because of import/export issues involving ivory.
The details of this Pico piece are as stated in the general "Pico" description above, though with ivory handle and wonderfully engraved silver bolsters. This minty, dainty piece has no cracks in the ivory (beautifully aged, dreamy creamy), no pin cracks anywhere, no checks in the ivory, ie, no ivory issues. Contact rbetznerr@sbcglobal.net if you wish to purchase, pricing at $XXXX shipped. The first email I receive stating "I'll take it at $XXXX shipped", gets it. Acceptable forms of payment are money orders, cashiers check or personal check if I know you. I don't like Paypal, but I'll consider it.
NOTE: THIS IS NOT ONE OF THE PICO'S FROM THE RECENT NORDIC OFFERING.
