Has anybody ever been prescribed Ritalin?

ritilin works on adults? i remember my teacher telling me about ritilin saying that its for kids and have little to no effects on an adult

I've gone my whole life with untreated ADD. They tried to give me that stuff as a kid and I flushed them down the toilet.

Never understood giving children Schedule II meds on a daily basis. And no, I am a not a Scientologist.

Lmao Danelle!!!!! That's about the same effect it's having on me! :D
I edged the front yard today and for clean up used the push broom instead of the blower. Felt so good to get outside and do something. Gonna mow the front and back tomorrow.
I think ritalin is just what I was needin!

Glad to hear you're feeling better.

Below is an excerpt from a pay service information site used by Pharmacists (which means no link possible) that rates what the OP said the med is being used for on him. Summary: there is evidence that it can work...
I bolded the most relevant parts:

METHYLPHENIDATE
4.5.B.10 Depression
a) Overview

FDA Approval: Adult, no; Pediatric, no

Efficacy: Adult, Evidence favors efficacy

Recommendation: Adult, Class III

Strength of Evidence: Adult, Category B

See Drug Consult reference: RECOMMENDATION AND EVIDENCE RATINGS

b) Summary:

Improves selected types of depression
Effective for depression in medically ill elderly patients
Effective for depression associated with cancer and cardiac surgery
May be effective for depressive and/or cognitive symptoms in post liver transplant and post-stroke patients
Enhances or potentiates the effects of other antidepressants

Imagine, an amphetamine related medication giving a depressed person some pep...

I agree with you on this MC!! It's doled out way to much just to quiet down the kid instead of dealing with the actual problem!

Thanks Rif!!!!!!!!! :D

It is doled out too much I agree, but for children and adults that really need it, it is a lifesaver. ADD and ADHD are real disorders, it isn't just that the child is misbehaving. I resisted putting my son on meds for a long time, trying many different things in the process; a change in diet, tough love, discipline, more sleep, less sleep, you name it. My doctor finally said "If he needed heart medication, would you deny him that?"

He's now 19 and living on his own, and has been off meds for about 3 years, by his own choice, although I still think he needs them.

Im not a huge med fan, so id avoid them at all costs. But then again i havent been to a doctor since i was 13. Im 24 now hehe

There is a lot of myth and legend associated with amphetamines in general and ritalin in particular. Taken in moderation they tend to improve the attention and focus of all age groups. One of the reasons that they are commonly abused is that they do work. The problem is that it is easy to take too much and really start to damage yourself. They can also mess up your sleep cycle.

They do NOT sedate children and put them in a trance, etc. They kind of quiet the noise around you and reduce the buzz of vagrant thoughts flitting across your consciousness--and make your mind work faster. Pretty much everybody does better on tests of mental accuity when they are on a little speed. This is not something that doctors generally want to broadcast because it would be like telling people that booz really does make you more handsome. A little speed gives you more conscious control of your thinking and speeds up your thinking.

My younger son has ADD. He is now 24 and still has challenges. Before ritalin he would be distracted by a pencil or his shoe laces. While we were trying to decide on the right course of action for him we put him in a class with a teacher who was great at handling little boys with attention issues. She would sit them in the front row and keep them engaged. She kept one of those little cricket clickers in her pocket and would discretely click it to recapture his attention when it would wander. She was the best teacher in the school, but ritalin was 10x as effective. My son is a big guy (about 250 #) and he finally got too large for ritalin. He moved on to Adderall (mixed methamphetimines), but that was just too hard to handle. He could never stay balanced on that. He would be up half the night and sleep through his morning classes. He copes without meds now, but he has no complaints about the time he spent on ritalin. You couldn't pay him to take Adderall.
