Has anybody here ever built their own heat treat kiln?

I have an old ceramic kiln that needs to be rebuilt anyway. I was thinking about using the ceramic blocks and the elements to redesign it for a heat treat kiln.

this is similar to what I have now...

I don't have a digital control or even a pyrometer the bricks are not in great condition but there are enough good ones to work with.

what I want is to make something like this...

front load short but deep and with a pyrometer and digital control.

Does anybody have plans for this? or advice?

thanks in advance.

Plenty of folks have built their own or refitted an existing one to suit their purposes. There are threads on oven builds and retrofits if you do some searching. If you are going to retrofit an existing unit then any plans you find will obviously have to be adjusted to suit what you are starting out with.
You can buy all of the components to build an oven from scratch, but your list of requirements will be based on a lot of variables, including what power you have availible (120v/240v), what temperature range you need it to operate in, etc.

I did it

I used the kiln top and bottom for oven top and bottom, which limited me to only 14" deep. Just have a good idea of what you want to make, sort through the bricks, and the only thing you should have to buy is angle iron of some sort for the frame and PID components (around $100 on ebay).

Mine ain't the prettiest lady on the block, but at least she's mine.
