..as emergency fuel where wood is not available in the area?

My reasoning is that vegetable oil would retard the combustion of alcohol, but I have not actually tried it yet.

Any other suggestions?

A candle and a garbage bag work pretty well at getting warm. I'd think that something like Esbit tabs might work as a compact, lightweight fuel source.

I haven't tried it either, but I have a feeling that alcohol and oil wouldn't mix very well, nor would they stay mixed for long. I also find it pretty unlikely that I would have vegetable oil or alcohol available on me in a situation where there wasn't any wood around that I could use.

You might be able to use just the vegetable oil to make a makeshift oil lamp with a piece of string or cloth for a wick. It wouldn't be enough to cook on, but it would add a bit of warmth to a small shelter.

I think that without some sort of a wick it would quit burning when the alcohol burned up. Chris

Baby oil burns fairly well. Just fashion a makeshift wick, let it burn down and it will light the oil.
