At the risk of getting too sentimental and long winded, this is a special new year for me.
In October 2013 after 18 years of marriage and not being able to have kids my wife and I adopted a newborn baby girl. We had about 5 weeks notice from the time we were picked by her birth mother until she was born.
Some of you may know me, many may not, but back about 15 years ago I started making Kydex sheaths for resale which expanded into leather working, blacksmithing, knife making and holster making. All of this was possible in large part because my wife travels for work 2-4 days a week and I would come home from my 50+ hour a week career in IT then go work in the shop until 2 or 3 in the morning. We didn't have kids so it was a lot of time for me to play and hang out with the dogs. Since about 2008 when Obama was elected I spent the vast majority of my time making pistol holsters for the booming firearms market.
Once we found out about our daughter I immediately stopped taking new orders and basically shut down my business. Although I have never regretted that decision those of you who make things for a living or hobby know it's never truly out of your blood. I kept making leather gear and the occasional knife for personal use and have had plenty of honey-do's to keep me busy in the shop, but have wanted to get back to making things for others as well.
Over the past few months, now that the baby is older, I've gradually noticed I can get a little more time here and there to go work in the shop. It's still tough to be separated from the family and impossible to do while my wife travels, so during the past 4-6 weeks I have relocated my leather working equipment into the house. After a lot of thought on how best to use my resources I settled on focusing on my first love, knives, and my passion for Busse knives in particular. Starting in the next few weeks I will be making ready to ship custom leather sheaths. For now I just plan to make them using the fairly extensive collection of Busse knives I own, as well as the ones I have on order.
So that's my Busse New Years Resolution. Back in business making some cool leather for the best knives on the market.
