well first off ME is the best state ever IMHO. But ive never been to acadia so my sister is bringing me there this summer and were stayin at two camp ground one in the sound and one in the woods. I dont know what kinda cutlery i should bring be cause you cant even use dead wood fo making a fire you have to buy wood. when i first heard that i was like wtf. so has anyone been there because i dont know what expect.

It's very rocky. The terrain is nothing like the rest of Maine. It's more like New Mexico arid regions -- rocky and smaller trees. The theory is that the island broke off of Europe during ancient plate shifts and got attached to the North American Continent.

The place is amazing. The coastline waters do not "fit" with the rest of the geography. That's in part what makes it so dramatic.

Expect this,

These are from a trip I took there in 2006. It is absolutely gorgeous and you'll have a great time. Take your standard woods trio.

I haven't been there in 14 years....but it was my inspiration to drop out of college and move to the mountains of Colorado.

Climb Cadillac Mountain before dawn and you can be the first person in the U.S. to see the sunrise.

The Precipice trail was closed last time I was there so I did the Ladder Trail. It was a lot of fun and an easy trail. The Precipice is exposed with metal ladder rungs. Really steep and not for the faint of heart. Check it out.

Be prepared for quite a bit of traffic, particularly on the eastern side of the island. Acadia is the second most visited park in the US, it's a pretty long stretch from wilderness. Mt. Desert Island is pretty neat in terms of geography, as previously noted. There's a store on Main Street in Bar Harbor that usually has a fairly interesting selection of cutlery (I don't recall the name, look around, you'll find it), also check out Hulls Cove Tool Barn on Rt. 3 just before the park entrance, I've scored some interesting used knives there in the past. Cadillac Mountain Sports in Ellsworth has a pretty good assortment of outdoors gear. The area is very well set up for bicycling.

I camped with my wife on Mt. Desert Island (pronounced locally as "dessert") about two years ago. It is a neat place to camp, but as noted above, it's hardly a primitive wilderness experience.

As a Mainer I would invite you to move here and fill a job to help fight against our failing economy.

The wood cutting ban is to limit deforestation, as people can tend to get a little out of bounds without such a ban. Would-be Naturalist start hacking down saplings and such for ad hoc shelter and bonfires. There are many more irresponsible naturist than responsible ones it would seem.

The terrain is rocky, heavily forested, highly traveled, and extremely beautiful. You'll have a great time.

This sure brings back memories of my childhood in the early Seventies. We camped in Acadia at Seawall Campground a few times and it was absolutely wonderful. I hope you have a great time and create memories of your own.

I thought it was Mt. Katahdin that had that honor :) Anyway, Maine is a beautiful state for camping and exploring. My wife and I used to go up there back in the 60's. Can't speak about Acadia, but we went to Baxter State Park (which includes Mt. Katahdin) and the Allagash Wilderness.

+1 on the Precipice trail. I did it last September, and it was great. I hiked up Cadillac Mountain about 10 years ago and loved it too.
I will be back this year in September. Can't really afford it, but my best friend is getting married - so I just had to go to Maine again!
I'll try to go to Baxter to - haven't been there in years.
While in Acadia try to do a sea kajak tour - it's pricey but well worth it. We had a lot of fun.

If you go to Acadia there used to be a seafood restaurant called Beels Pier. Not sure of spelling? The lobsters came right off the boat next door. You picked a lobster and it went into a net bag with corn and potatoes. A brass number tag was attached. The whole thing was quick boiled and you had a dinner fit for a king! Worth a look. Enjoy! Knives? Take a leatherman tool and fuggedaboutit:-)

Yeah! I always thought it was Beals Lobster Wharf or something. They give it to you in a paper bag and you eat it on the dock.
