Has anyone done a comparison of the Junglas and the BK5?

I ordered the BK5 (hasn't arrived yet) and for a long time I've been curious about the Junglas. Now I'm wondering if I should have just bougth the Junglas.

Price wise they probably end up the same if you add micarta and a sheath to the Becker. Roughly: $75 BK5 + $45 micarta +$40 sheath = $160

Does the Becker need micarta scales, probably not but I will probably get them or make some cocobolo scales just to dress it up. From what I've read the sheath isn't satisfactory for most people and I'm picker than most so it's going to need an upgrade.

Performance wise is there much difference? Chopping isn't high on my priority list but does one significantly outchop the other? Wood carving? Camp kitchen?

I rarely have a need to baton something so I'm going to leave that out completely.

Who has both knives, what are your thoughts?

Thanks,

I would think a better comparison would be the BK9 and Junglas. The BK5 is much different animal.

I don't own either, but I'm with snakedoc on this one. Different blade shapes, and applications. I think the things you would be doing with the 5 you wouldn't do with the junglas. Again, I don't own either so it's just my edjucated guess. I hear nothing but praise for the bk5 and I think you will enjoy it. If you don't believe me just ask clich ;)

I've not owned or handled a Junglas, but I'm comfortable saying it will out chop the BK5. However, the BK5 chops very well for it's weight.

Junglas has a ~10.5 inch blade and weighs 22.5 ounces (per ESEE site).

BK5 has an 8 inch blade (~7 inch cutting edge) and weighs ~12 ounces.

Unless of course you meant to say BK9.

Thirded. I don't have a BK-5, but I do own a BK-9 and have played with a friend's Junglas a little and that is a far more appropriate comparison than the 5.

Actually a mate and I were discussing on the Aus equivalent of this forum the need to set up a 'chop-off' between his Busse BWM, Junglas and my BK-9. There will pictures. :)

Depends on the application really. They both excel at different things. The junglas is a better chopper hands down. But if you want a better all arounder that can chop if need be, then the bk5

Edit to add that I have owned both and also a bk9. My bk9 sees little use since I'm not out chopping down trees. Same with the junglas. It is too much Blade for me. I'd rather have the bk5 (it is my favorite) and have the control that the blade allows then having a huge mother and regretting it if I wanted a nimbler knife

I have a Junglas and it is a great chopper, has very nice grips and the sheath/kydex is very solid and comfortable.....wouldn't get rid of it and I also own larger Busses. I don't own a Becker so I can't speak to that but I see the Junglas as a compliment to a smaller camp blade.....I prefer an 8" blade as an all-round knife such as a Fehrman First STrike(7.5") or a Nexus Caio(7.5") but it is .30" thick versus the Fehrman which is .25" thick.

What Snakedoc said.... that's the first thing that came to mind when I saw this. After participating in the HBK9 contest I've been thinking about pairing these two against eachother "Junglas vs BK9" for a review/comparison thread. I'd love to beat the finish off of them and this time there'd be a full cutting test with ropes, mats etc.

I've already popped the BK9 so I'd have to cut teh same stuff with a Junglas to make'em even........hmmmm

Anyhoo it's a much closer comparison.

A Junglas and a BK5? Thats like comparing a Spyderco Ladybug to a....I don't know...a tunafish sandwich.

I'm looking for an all-rounder and I was wondering if the Junglas could be that but I guess you right, it's a chopper and I'm not really interested in a chopper.

I didn't intend to compare the BK9. I know it and it's not what I want.

Thanks for the feedback. If my BK5 ever gets here I could see it for myself!

only a few people don't like the sheath, from what i've read ;)

it's good enough, esp if you're leaving it in the kitchen.

the spec ops sheath and hunter variants are good fits, $25 for the low end one if you can find one. or goto Blade show and haggle the SpecOps people down, i think i got a sheath off them for $15 :>

BK5 and Junglas are about as wildly dissimilar as two fixed blade knives can be. If you know you don't want a BK9 because it seems too choppy, then you REALLY don't want a Junglas. If you want to compare your BK5 to some ESEE, I'd think the ESEE 6 or maybe the new laser strike would be a slightly better comparison.

I have a Junglas, a BK9 and I'm reasonably sure I can borrow my gf's BK5. If all this happens and the universe does squat o'er me as it usually does, I'll work on it this weekend.
