Has Anyone Ever Seen A Khukuri With A Guard?

Howard's recent thread about the Keating and Friends Knife Seminar kind of intrigues me...

What would a well designed guard look like on a khukuri. It would, of course, mostly serve to keep the wielder's hand off the blade, but could of course, be also used in a defensive situation. If it were kept on the small side, it might even look nice on a khukuri. Does anyone have any ideas?

I think i've seen one somewhere with a D guard around the knuckles and an up turning gurad on the backside a la butterfly sword. Might be kinda cool if i were going to fight with it often, but would bug me using it for anyting else. Of course, this is a moot point for me, because if i ever -have- to get into a knife fight where the shear size of my 20" kobra or whatever doesn't make an amature punk pee his pants and run, then i'm dead. I -never- want to get into a knife fight. I'd rather take on a thug twice my size with a bat with nails driven into it. even then, i'd be much better off talking him down, making pals with him, paying him a few compliments, and then cutting the brake lines on his car later;)

Thanks, guys; Bruise's idea might be the most aesthetic one of all... :D

not too far off, Dan....:D :p

I'm putting one on a chiruwa AK for somebody here.....when it comes time, we'll make a showing.

Thanks for the photos, John! I do admit that I prefer the classic khukuri sans guard... ;)

Bruise, do you have any pics of your khukuri with the guard? :D

sabre guard or D guard.....bout the only thing that looks good on it....makes it sword-like, of course.

can't remember if I've seen any bowie-type guards....

...except (IIRC) for one Shane Justice showed me at the blade show. I'll shoot him an email - see if he's got a pic.

Do you think D guard practical for a Khuk? I got a feeling that the D guard sort of restricting the hand movement in handling and manoeuvring Khuk either in field work or in fighting!

John? DK? Bruise? Forumites?

perhaps my head has swollen beyond the reaches of the bfc avatar?

hit "refresh"....mine is working fine....

Hi Guys...just read this thread...

Yup..I got a KLO with a guard...or rather my wife does....I told
her she could pick any of the knives I took down for my JS test
last year for herself...wouldn't you know she picked that one!

It has seen some use but I still have the original pic I took last year....the handle is shaped for her hand so a bit smal for me.

Dan if you want I will shoot you a pic...and you can post.

I guess you don't really need one for a choppie knife unless you're chopping folks. A pokie knife is nice to have a guard for. Maybe a khukuri with a finger stop would be the best of both worlds.

Dunno... I just wanted to increment my post count.

I still like that Stag handled one that N2S has or had. I should've tried too trade for that one, don't know why I din't. :grumpy:

Large case of the Okie Dumbass I guess.;)

Dan is putting a guard on a Chiruwa for me- y'all know how I kept pining for a kuk with a guard. He thought up something a little different- we'll see what you think.

I actually bought a kuk from Dale Sandberg, but sans "D" guard, as I don't usually care for them.
