Has Anyone Every had a Knife "Removed" from a checked-in suitcase?

I'll be taking a commercial flight from Florida to New York state in a couple of weeks. Although I am packing lightly enough to use a carry-on, I would really like to bring a knife along with me, so much so that I am even willing to check my small bag. I don't want to bring anything extraordinary, just a nice small, pocketable slip joint. I'll be spending lots of time at a racetrack and outdoors in general, so having a knife would be handy for things like cutting fruit, opening pistachio shells, etc. Has anyone here ever had a knife removed (stolen) from a checked bag. I'd rather bring a nicer-type knife, but will resort to bringing a beater if theft (confiscation) at the airport might be an issue.

I live in between Washington State and Florida, traveling back to Florida 3-4 times a year. Since I sometimes stay for weeks or even a month or two at a time, I like to bring knives I enjoy carrying, which has often been my Sebenza (not cheap, but not irreplaceable). Never a problem thus far. I used to keep them all together in a pouch, but now I put them in various pockets of my pants. I check for them and put them in my pocket right there in the baggage claim carousel. I've even had flight issues, luggage lost, and still returned to me with the contents untouched....YM(there's a rewards program joke in there somewhere)MV

I've travelled domestically with 3+ folders in my checked baggage, dozens of times over the last few years. Never had an issue.

On a side note: I have on multiple occasions, noticed condensation on my knife when removing it from my luggage. Whether that be from traveling in a luggage compartment, or changes in humidity at my destination, I know not. Could perhaps be a consideration on which knife one chooses to take. It's even been enough to cause some discoloration once on a nickel silver Case bolster

Luggage on a plane is kept in a hold that is 20F lower than the cabin at altitude. I would expect that to cause a fast change in temperature as the plane takes off and lands.

Not sure about that. I suspect the pets wouldn't do well in the hold.

He’s right. Southwest tells you that.

I’ve travelled many times with a small knife in checked bag. Never a problem. Travelled a lot with dive knives checked in also, never a problem.

Celcius or Fahrenheit? I can see F but C would be tough.

I recently traveled internationally with a knife in checked luggage, no problem.

True story, one time I though I paid for checked luggage, but I didn't, so when I got to the airport, I realized that, and I realized I still have my Leatherman wave in my pocket, I put it in a pouch, ductaped it, and threw it the the carry on luggage, yes, I said carry on. And they just let me through, yes, they let me through.

About a month ago, it was on the news in my country that an old couple brought a knife onto a flight and started cutting apples. Airport security in my country is not doing a good job.

"Pets are placed in “hold 5”, at the rear of the plane. It is part of the cargo area underneath the cabin, but it is separated and it is heated. It is kept at the same temperature and pressure as the cabin, since the captain is notified of animals on board, and will make sure of this."

Well, it looks like I'll be covering my bases by bringing along either my old Case Medium Stockman or an Opinel #7, and checking my bag. I do miss the little freedoms we once enjoyed. Thanks, everyone.

No, never. And I, too have flown and checked knives many times.
