has anyone here managed to break an ESEE 5?

Moose,

Thanks for the info on throwing knives. That makes sense. I've played with throwing stuff (Mostly non-knife stuff) that can stick to understand what you're talking about with the vibrations. I had never thought of putting together the two and two of vibration and RC but that makes perfect sense.

God bless,
Adam

Everyone is taking this the wrong way. When said abused i did throw it into trees, but i did not hit concrete or anything else besides wood. When I said abused I meant I used it and I used it a lot, not like everyone who shows pictures of non used knives. JV3 re read my last post I never said I was chopping on an angle. The stump that I was dropping it into was slanted. Also I could not think any higher of the becker line.

fair enough. i apologise for doubting your story. tooj just confirmed a broken bk-2. whether or not they'll replace it is another story. there's a thread about it on the becker forum.

i stand behind my words so i'll buy you a gold membership so you can participate in esee's awesome contests. hopefully you'll stick around and contribute useful info. just log off and on and you should see your status change.

why abuse knives at all? People don't abuse can openers by smashing them into cinder blocks, or cars by driving them into walls repeatedly

I asked my friend the same question, and he gave me pretty decent answer...

He has family in rural Jamaica and goes there for 4 weeks every summer. He basically said, out there, in the jungle/mountain life that's the real world. Every day cushy suburban life here isn't per se. At least for this arguments sake. When you only own 1 knife, and you may never get another one....you need to KNOW that that thing works! And can do all sorts of hard tasks with now worries. Not many people use there can opener 100 times a day, and feel like the need there life to depend on whether it works well or not. He takes friends and family gifts when he goes out there. He said when he gives a dude out there a knife or machete, he wants that guy to be stoked for life, and not have to worry about it breaking or something. This year he said he is taking some Esee's out there to give to the guys. I'll make sure he gets a pic of the Rastas smoking with an Esee in hand!

Although they do drive FJ Cruisers and Jeeps throught the rock crawling Rubicon to assure they are trail rated. But yes, most FJ drivers don't see the dirt either.

I had a Cold steel flying V i believe it was called. That snapped right away and after using my Becker all the time I figured it would never break. My new one will come no where near flying. No need for a Gold Membership, thank you though. I am sure without going into detail throwing it sounded stupid, but honestly before reading up on this forum, I was mostly ignorant to blade and steel specs and types. Now I have done my Homework and really enjoy awesome knives. Sorry for Thread Highjack.

I threw it into trees hundreds of times

There's your problem right there. Is it a throwing knife? No. Is throwing it silly and abusive? Yep.

Of course it broke.

p.s. I did the same sort of silly dopey and dinked up some knives when I was a kid. Live and learn I guess.

Hi Paul,
thanks for the response.
Personally, I equate abusing a tool with inexperience. An inexperienced user can break a tool in seconds, a tool that might have lasted a skilled user their whole lives.
When I go out on multi-day offtrack trips, I baby my ultralight gear, because it's important that it works properly.

I also use my knives with care, partly because I don't want them breaking, but also because misusing them could result in injury. Where I walk, the only evac would be via helicopter. So no crazy knife throwing, wild hacking away with sharp tools for me :) Slow and controlled will do.

There's a difference between using a tool well, even for hard tasks and abuse. Or so I think!

i already paid for it so...if you really don't want it contact spark and give it away to someone else?

I will gladly accept the gold membership ;)

ha. stick around here awhile. i started a contest thread awhile ago...christmas is right around the corner and i'll probably start another one then :D gotta be a rat pack member though.

JV3,

wow man, many props... I haven't read the whole thread and don't understand why you offered up, but I will say I'd like a platinum membership sir, and would happily throw a screwdriver at a tree many times over:thumbup::D

I believe throwing a non-throwing-knife is the fastest way to break it. As child I broke 2-3 heavy knifes with this method.. My fahter wasn't amused.. :D
