Has anyone milled the grind onto their blade?

I want to make a pretty medium sized fixed blade bowie out of some D2. Instead of grinding a "V" to shape the blade, I have designed a jig in my head to hold the spine so I can mill the grind on my bridgeport. I know, groan if you must.
Has anyone attempted anything like this before?

Nope! But if I had a Bridgeport, who knows.

Good luck, Fred

I have done this a couple of times. I put the blade in a vise at 10deg and milled the bevels. It was easy to keep them even. The only problem that you may run into is where the blade curves near the tip, an endmill can't follow the curve up and around like your hands can.

I have a dedicated horizonal mill that cuts both sides of the blade at once up to 33" long.... The cutters were quite spendy to have made.

I recall the one that you do fullers with, but I don't recall the setup for bevel cutting. Any pictures?

I wish I had a horizontal mill to use...

Striper28, did you have any problems with chatter or deflection?
Did you use a standard angle vise?

I'm not to worried about the tip or curves. I can put those in after the milling is done.

If anyone has any advice, please help a guy out as this will be my first knife-making project.

I've recently started experimenting with this.

I use a 3/4" Ball mill and trig out steps for depth of cut.
The scallops that are left come out pretty easy.

I kinda like this method.

This is my jig to support thin blade while milling

Learn to freehand grind it is alot faster than setting up jigs, and having to depend on a mill for the rest of your knives you make..

I use a milling machine all the time. I use it to mill the handles of my balisongs and a few blades as well. I would suggest that you buy the book of Don Robinson. It is very informative specially if you use this method.

Knifemakers who mill thier blades are a rare breed. It is very a unique style

I thought RJ Martin does this for some of his fixed blades to get the "striated" effect?

Or am I totally off base?
