I was just curious who on this forum is either writing a book or wanting to write a book some day? if your writing one I'd love to here about it!

I have contributed to a few, and have written magazine articles, but no complete book.

I've written a book on horsemanship not on knife making.

Dr. D (post mainly over in Customs and Handmade) has written one that I am aware of and is in the middle of another.

I wrote a book with my brother about my great grandfather George Schrade. That was back in 1979 when publishing was a bit more difficult than it is today with online publishing houses. Marketing is much easier today also.

Are you writing a book now?

I wrote a book on a boring technical subject which was published a few years back - still available on Amazon, I believe... Not nearly as fun as knifemaking!

Randall Knives a reference book by Sheldon Wickersham, Edna Wickersham.

A must have book for any Randall collector, (or any knife collector for that matter) it has the best history/timeline and includes many variations of every model. If you can find a copy, it's one of the most beautiful reference books I've ever seen. The pictures alone are worth it and Sheldon's knowledge of Randall Knives is second to none.

There are quite a few writers on the forum, check out the Prac Tac sub forum there are a couple there and I'd be willing to bet that in the major sub forums, (Traditional, Customs and let's not forget our ever beloved Bernard Levine) there are many others in just having a brain lock and can't think of any specific names at the moment.

I'm sure others will chime in.

Sorry, I didn't realize the sub forum for some reason I thought this was in general.

I've written short stories for my grandkids for years. I expanded one into a book and published it and two of the shorts at smashwords.com this year. It's a lot of fun and helps keep the kids away from the TV and video games...

Yes, it is still in a huge batch of computer files. I still want to finish the new shop first.
I open the "BOOK FOLDER" about once a month and add more info. It will eventually be a series of books. About 75% of the info for the books is already there, it just needs to be organized and photos and drawings added. My plan is to use the new shop and the building of the new equipment as the source for the photos and articles. I don't think anything will be ready for print this year, but don't give up...it will get published eventually.

The first and main book will be , "KNIFEMAKING - Modern techniques and methods for making knives" ( Pretty much an A-Z book for how to make knives the modern way. Glossary)

Other titles in the folder:
"Making Your First Knife - A step by step guide for hand making your first knife" (A how-to for making a drop point hunter, with plans and information on setting up a starter shop, tools, simple methods, and advice for the beginner.)
"The Sgian Dubh - Creating the classic Scottish knife" ( Plans for five sgian dubh blades with many handle options. Includes a discussion on how to "personalize" a sgian dubh, plus other info. )
"Japanese Knives and Swords - Basic Techniques and Projects for the Modern Knifemaker" ( Kitchen knives to katana how to do them in a modern knifemaker's shop. Glossary)
"Heat Treatment for the Metallurgically Challenged - Simple and basic explanations and methods of hardening and tempering knife steel." ( Basic explanation of metallurgy and a how-to on doing HT. Charts and tables for HT. Glossary.)
"Shop Talk - Bladesmith's Guide to Shop Tips, Tricks, Jigs, Tools, and Techniques - Methods and plans for making you shop more efficient and making better knives" ( Advice and information based frequent questions and many of my Shop Talk posts. Information from other discussions and tutorials.)
"The Modern Knifemaker's Forge - A guide on building forges, with plans for making a PID controlled Gas forge for Bladesmithing" ( Plans for forges from super simple to the Ultimate)
"The Knifemakers Shop - How to Build and Equip the Modern Knifemaking Shop". ( Probably several books of about a dozen equipment projects per book. Shop building ideas/plans in each book.)

I can't wait! I hope the sections on metallurgy and heat treatment have a fair amount of detailed information. Hopefully the information will be technical but in plain English with explanations about what happens at each stage of transformation. What happens and WHY and how does that affect the blade and what that would mean to the knife maker in terms of the choices he might make. You know, explanations geared towards knife makers and not industry.

Stacy I can't wait to see those books!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SOUNDS AMAZING!!!! really looking forward to the Modern Knifemakers Forge and the Knifemakers shop and Shop Talk
there's allot more people than I thought who have done some with writing books or short story's.

Those book titles sound very promesing.
I like the idea of something special like the The Sgian Dubh-book

Thanks Ted. I'm almost sold out with 17 copies of the original 3000 left. It's been a great success. http://www.knifeworld.com/randallreference.html

A word to those that would write such a book; do it for yourself as a passion, a work of love - it'll show and others will appreciate your effort. Otherwise, don't bother. Simple as that...
